Bobby Portis had 27 points and 13 rebounds, starting in place of the injured Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks wrapped up the top seed in the NBA playoffs, beating the Chicago Bulls 105-92 on Wednesday night.
Antetokounmpo was ruled out before the game because of right knee soreness. He had 28 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists against Washington on Tuesday night.
Brook Lopez had 26 points, point guard Jrue Holiday added 20 points, 15 assists and eight rebounds and Jevon Carter had 16 points in a starting role. Khris Middleton started for the Bucks, but played just eight minutes before exiting with right knee soreness. He was 0 for 3 from the floor.
Milwaukee improved to 58-22, fighting back from a 10-point, third-quarter deficit. The Bucks lead fellow Eastern Conference foe Boston by three games with two games remaining.
Garrett Mitchell hit a tiebreaking homer off Adam Ottavino in the ninth inning and the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the New York Mets 7-6 on Wednesday for their fifth straight victory. Mitchell sent a 3-2 cutter from Ottavino (0-1) over the right-field wall for his third homer in his past two games. The rookie outfielder went deep twice Tuesday in a 9-0 triumph.
The Brewers swept a series of at least three games for the first time since winning three straight at Cincinnati from June 17 to 19 in 2022. The Brewers have won 18 of their past 21 home games against the Mets.
Milwaukee’s Joey Wiemer added a three-run shot for the rookie’s first career homer.
After going scoreless in their first 16 innings of the season, the Brewers have scored 38 runs in their past 36 innings.
Pete Alonso hit a pair of two-run homers off Corbin Burnes and Francisco Lindor went 3- for- 4 with two doubles and two RBIs for the Mets.
Burnes failed to protect an early 4-1 lead and allowed six runs and seven hits in 4 1/3 innings. In his first two starts, Burnes has allowed 10 runs over 9 1/3 innings.
Alonso’s first homer tied the game at 4-all in the third. His second of the game put the Mets ahead 6-4 in the fifth.
The Brewers tied the game again in the bottom of the fifth on Jesse Winker’s two-run, two-out double to right-center against Drew Smith. Winker’s double came after Luke Voit stole second to move the tying run into scoring position. It was the second career stolen base for the 32-year-old Voit, who was playing in his 489th game.
Milwaukee’s Devin Williams (1-0) retired the side in order in the ninth.
The Brewers are off Thursday before starting a three-game home series with the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday. Scheduled starters Friday are RHP Brandon Woodruff (0-0, 1.50) for the Brewers and RHP Jack Flaherty (1-0, 0.00) for the Cardinals.
Elsewhere in the NL Central Wednesday the Braves downed the Cardinals 5-2, the Red Sox beat the Pirates 4-1 and the Cubs at the Reds game was postponed.
Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Aaron Ashby will have arthroscopic surgery on his throwing shoulder and could miss the entire season.
Brewers manager Craig Counsell announced after Milwaukee’s 7-6 victory over the New York Mets on Wednesday that Ashby would have surgery Friday in Washington.
“This puts him out for significant time,” Counsell said. “You won’t see him until late in the season at best.”
Counsell said he could have a more specific timeline for Ashby after the operation. Counsell said during spring training that Ashby would miss a couple of months with inflammation in his shoulder. The situation apparently got to the point where surgery was the best option.
Ashby, who turns 25 on May 24, went 2-10 with a 4.44 ERA and 126 strikeouts in 107 1/3 innings last season. The Brewers signed him last July to a $20.5 million, five-year contract that would be worth $41.5 million over seven seasons if a pair of club options are exercised.
Ashby is the nephew of 14-year big league veteran pitcher Andy Ashby.

Wisconsin wildlife officials are already thinking about the upcoming deer season.
The DNR is seeking public comment for the 2023 deer season, including harvest quotas and other key parts of deer management as part of the annual County Deer Advisory Council (CDAC) process.
Annually, each county’s CDAC meets to provide input and recommendations to the DNR on deer management within their area, based on deer herd metrics, county deer population objectives and the public feedback they receive. Information on each county’s harvest and population metrics can be found on the Wisconsin Deer Metrics System.
These recommendations are reviewed and set annually so they can be adjusted as needed in response to the previous year’s deer harvest, winter severity and other factors and put into effect for the upcoming deer hunting season.
Following the CDAC process, the DNR will bring its recommendations for the 2023 season to the Natural Resources Board for review on June 21.
The online public comment period is open April 8-16.
The public can also attend their local CDAC meeting to join the discussion about local deer management and provide input on deer season details.
CDAC meetings will take place April 24-May 4 and can be attended in-person or virtually. Check the meeting schedule and location for details on your CDAC meeting.
The public can submit questions about the process to DNRCDACWebMail@wisconsin.gov.
