RIPON COMMON COUNCIL APPROVES SECOND SRO POSITION
The Ripon Common Council Monday night approved the creation of a second school resource officer position. Police Chief Bill Wallner told the council they were seeing a need. He says their current SRO Lindsey Michels spends a majority of her time in the middle and high school and a second officer would be able to spend more time with the “littles,” or with elementary school students. The second SRO would go back to patrol during the summer months. Chief Wallner commended the school district for being a leader in school safety programs. School District Superintendent Mary Whitrock returned the compliment saying in her 10 years with the District she has been impressed with the support the District has gotten from the city through the police department in making the community safe. The council passed the second SRO proposal on a 7 to 1 vote. The School Board unanimously approved the program at their March 20th meeting. The City and School District will split the cost of the position. City Administrator Adam Sonntag says there is enough money in the police department’s budget this year to pay for the second SRO.
