22 March 2023 News

Bond has been set at $1 million cash for a 25-year-old man suspected of murdering his parents at their Town of Wolf River home last Saturday. Erik Metzig made his initial appearance in Winnebago County court Tuesday on a pair of first-degree intentional homicide charges. Seventy-two-year-old David Metzig and 71-year-old Jan Metzig were found dead of gunshot wounds after one of their other sons and authorities were conducting a welfare check. According to the criminal complaint a gun was found on the kitchen counter. The son told authorities it was a rifle Erik had recently shown interest in. A 9-millimeter Glock handgun was found in a garbage bag in the garage. Unspent 9 mm shells were found near the Metzig’s bodies. Erik Metzig was living with his parents at the time of the shooting. He was arrested at a YMCA in Kimberly where he allegedly told a staff member he was upset about family and was looking for an apartment. Investigators also found a journal in his bedroom where entries detailed that he wanted to eliminate his parents and make it look they disappeared while out for a walk. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 30th.
