3/18/23 Suspicious Deaths Reported in Wolf River

Winnebago County Sheriff’s officials have identified the husband and wife found dead in a Town of Wolf River residence Saturday morning. They were 72-year-old David Metzig and 71-year-old Jan Metzig. Investigators termed their deaths suspicious, but say the public has nothing to worry about because they have a person of interest in custody. A man with the same last name has been booked into the Winnebago County Jail on intentional homicide charges but there has been no confirmation that he is a suspect in the case. The Metzig’s owned Union Star Cheese since 1980, but the business has been in the family since 1911. They were well known in the cheese making community.

The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a pair of suspicious deaths. Deputies responded to a residence in the Town of Wolf River Saturday morning around 5:15. Inside the home they found two dead persons. The deaths are considered suspicious in nature. A person of interest is in custody, and there is no danger to the public. Fox Valley Metro Police and the Outagamie County Sheriff’s Office deputies found that person at the Heart of the Valley YMCA in the Village of Kimberly around 7:45 am Saturday morning. A Sheriff’s official says the person of interest was acting strange while inside the YMCA. Officers were able to confirm it was the person of interest because of the ID they used to get into the building. The Sheriff’s Office says its thoughts and prayers remain with the family and friends of the deceased.
