TWO ARRESTED IN FDL COUNTY DRUG BUST

Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s K9 Rip participated in another big drug bust Monday evening. A State Trooper asked for assistance on a traffic stop on Interstate 41 near State Highway 23. The trooper believed the vehicle was transporting illegal drugs. An open air sniff conducted by Rip and his handler confirmed there may be drugs in the vehicle. During a search a brick of cocaine weighing over 2.6 pounds, 3 grams of fentanyl and cash were seized. The street value of the cocaine is about $100,000. Two Fox Valley area men were taken into custody. The driver had a long criminal history including previous drug convictions and was out on bond from Washington County for OWI 5th or 6th offense, cocaine possession, and other criminal charges. The passenger has a criminal history that includes drug and firearm related charges, and had an active arrest warrant out of Winnebago County. Both were taken to the Fond du Lac County Jail. The Lake Winnebago Area MEG Unit is assisting in the investigation. (Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s photo).

SUSPECT IN FATAL CALUMET COUNTY ACCIDENT POSTS BOND

The 59-year-old Kaukauna woman suspected of driving drunk and causing an accident in Calumet County last Saturday that killed a 19-year-old Grand Chute man and injured two others has posted bond. Bridget Miller posted the $300,000 cash bond Wednesday and was released from custody. She is suspected of causing the two-vehicle crash at the intersection of State Highway 114 and Oneida Street. According to the criminal complaint her blood alcohol level was nearly 2 ½ times the legal limit and it was her fifth drunken driving offense. Miller is charged with six felonies including homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle and injury by intoxicated use of a vehicle. She will be back in court for a preliminary hearing on April 21st.

RIPON COMMON COUNCIL APPROVES THE KEEPING OF BACKYARD CHICKENS

By a 7-to-1 vote Tuesday night the Ripon Common Council approved amending an ordinance to allow the keeping of backyard chickens in the city. During the public comment section two residents spoke in favor of amending the ordinance. Those applying for permits to keep backyard chickens will be allowed to keep up to 6 hens. Mayor Ted Grant noted that was a manageable number and chickens are a social animal. Some concerns were expressed about chicken coops being kept up to certain standards which City Administrator Adam Sonntag said would be monitored. The Council also approved fees for the permits. It will be $25 for the initial permit and $15 upon renewal. Sonntag says unlike cat and dog licenses which only take 5 minutes to do, it will take several hours for city officials to do the permitting for the keeping of backyard chickens.  Sonntag says application for chicken keeping will become available in April. Alderman Howard Hansen voted against amending the ordinance.

GREEN LAKE SCHOOL BOARD PRESIDENT RESIGNS

The Green Lake School Board president resigned last night in the wake of a discussion and vote to censure Board Member Mary Cyrier. Cyrier allegedly broke open meeting law regarding illegal quorums and her alleged harassment of a staff member led to the resignation of that person. After quite a bit of discussion a vote was taken on formally censuring her but it failed on a 3 to 3 vote with one abstention. Discussion continued after that over whether the school board was “fractured.” School Board President Andy Gryske said he believes it is and it occurred while he was in charge. He then stated he was resigning immediately. He also said if he is reelected to the board next month he will decline to serve.

FIT TESTING CONCERN

The President of the Governing Board for the Ripon Area Fire District says it has been a number of years since they have completed fit testing for the protective masks that firefighters wear at fires and other emergencies they respond to. Ellen Sorensen says her background includes working at public safety for a couple of decades where her concern was for the safety of law enforcement officers and now it is for firefighters. She says a properly fitted mask will ensure that firefighters are not inhaling smoke or toxic fumes when they respond to a call. She says line items were included in the District’s budget for both fit testing and physicals so it is just a matter of getting them done.
