Semis Collide on State Highway 26
No one was injured when a tanker was hit from behind by a semi flatbed truck on State Highway 26 north of Waupun Monday morning. Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s officials say the tanker was not compromised. The tanker was carrying ethanol. There was heavy front-end damage to the semi flatbed truck. The tanker remained in the roadway while the flatbed went into a ditch. The crash north of Willow Creek Road shut down both the north and southbound lanes of State Highway 26. The accident happened just before 7:30 Monday morning. (Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s photos).
Indiana Man Arrested On Drug Charges in Columbia County
An Indiana man is facing drug charges after marijuana, drug paraphernalia, and over ½ pound of cocaine were found in his vehicle during a traffic stop in Columbia County early Saturday morning. A Sheriff’s Sergeant pulled the vehicle over on Interstate 90/94/39 in the Town of Dekorra for a speeding violation. The driver, 36-year-old Andrew Barrett of New Carlisle, Indiana, showed signs of recent drug use and was nervous. A Sheriff’s Office K-9 was deployed and alerted to the odor of controlled substances from the vehicle. Barrett was taken to the Columbia County Jail on drug possession charges and for operating a motor vehicle with a restricted controlled substance.
Suspicious Mail in Oshkosh
Oshkosh Police and Fire were dispatched to the 200 block of North Eagle Street late Monday morning for a piece of suspicious mail. Inside the piece of mail was a white powdery substance. The Oshkosh and Appleton Fire Departments’ Hazardous Materials Teams responded to the location and tested the substance. It was determined to be a non-hazardous material. The time of the response was 10:32 am.
Interim Moves For Ripon Area Fire District
The Governing Board for the Ripon Area Fire District recently approved interim appointments for command structure and interim staffing as work continues on strategic planning. Board President Ellen Sorensen says one thing the District has been lacking is a stronger handling of its administration. She says the appointment of Heather Donovan to Assistant Chief with an increase in hours was the right thing to do given the hours Donovan has been devoting to administrative work for the District. Robert Whitaker of McMahon and Associates has also been doing a great deal of administrative work. Sorensen says the appointment of John Hollatz as Interim Fire Chief and Cody Boers as Interim Deputy Chief will also help with the command structure. She says with Hollatz’s appointment and more hours for Donovan they will be able to reduce the number of hours McMahon and Associates has been billing the District and devote more time toward a strategic plan.
Budget Say
State Senator Joan Ballweg says it is important state residents get to have their say on the next two-year budget for the state. To that end the Joint Finance Committee, which Ballweg sits on, will have listening sessions next month in Waukesha, Eau Claire, Wisconsin Dells and Minocqua. Ballweg said she planned to have her own listening sessions which were announced Monday. The state lawmaker from Markesan says two things she knows will be take up a lot of time on the budget will be K-12 education and revenue sharing. She says the timeline for the budget will include the JFC working on it in May and June with approval by the end of June. After that the Governor will be able to make vetoes to portions of the budget he doesn’t agree with. The JFC has also created an online portal to take comments.

Ballweg Announces Budget Listening Sessions
State Senator Joan Ballweg, a member of the state’s Joint Finance Committee, Monday announced eight budget listening sessions for residents of the 14th State Senate District. The first two are on Friday, March 24th from 9 to 10 am at the Kilbourn Library in Wisconsin Dells, and from 10:30 am to 11 am at the Adams County UW Extension Office in Adams. Three more are planned for Monday, March 27th at the Waupaca City Hall from 9:30 to 10:30 am, the Clintonville Library from 1 to 2 pm, and the Ripon Library from 4 to 5 pm. The final three listening sessions will be on Monday, April 10th from 9 to 10 am at the Randolph Village Hall, the Lodi Public Library from 1 to 2 pm, and the Portage Public Library from 3 to 4 pm.
Financial Literacy Bill
A financial literacy bill co-authored by State Representative Alex Dallman and State Senator Joan Ballweg is gaining bipartisan support in the state legislature. Dallman says over 50 co-sponsors have signed onto the bill that would require high school students to take a half-credit of a financial literacy course before they graduate. The state lawmaker from Green Lake feels this would benefit students as they make decisions after graduation about things like loans, home mortgages, finances, stocks and investments. He feels some students take out bigger loans than they need to get through college or a technical school and a little financial knowledge could help them come out of the college experience with less debt. A similar bill during the last legislative session didn’t have enough time to come out of committee but it also required a full-credit.
Fox Cities Job Fair
More than 100 companies across various industries including office, service, manufacturing, healthcare, and other professional positions, will be looking for their next new hires at the Fox Cities Employment Fair. The Fair will be held from 10 am to 2 pm Tuesday, March 21st at the Fox Cities Exhibition Center in Appleton. Job seekers of all skill levels can connect directly with hiring managers and learn about available positions. Some companies will even conduct on-site interviews. Job seekers are encouraged to bring resumes to share and to dress for the career they want. Mercury Racing Scholarship
Mercury Racing is accepting applications for its annual Excellence Trade scholarship. The scholarship is in its fifth year. It is designed to support students based near the company’s Fond du Lac headquarters who plan to further their education in a trade related field. The $5,000 scholarship is available to high school seniors or recent high school graduates from public or private schools or junior colleges within the districts of: Campbellsport, Fond du Lac, Lomira, Mayville, New Holstein, North Fond du Lac, Oakfield, Oshkosh, Randolph, Ripon, Rosendale-Brandon and Waupun. Criteria for the scholarship and application forms are available at the Mercury Racing.com website. The deadline to apply is April 7th.
