The Laconia Girls Basketball team brought home their first Gold Ball trophy Saturday after the Spartans defeated Aquinas in the Division 4 championship game 64 to 51. Reece Keel scored 16 points in the first half alone before Laconia broke free in the second half. They led by as much as 20 points on their way to the victory. Laconia fell short last year and in 2019 as the runner-ups, but this year they were able to break through and win the state championship.

Tyler Kolek and Number 6 Marquette raced out to a hefty lead and never looked back beating Number 15 Xavier 65 to 51 Saturday night to win the Big East Tournament for the first time.

Purdue and Marquette were far from favorites in their own conferences going into the season. They are now the top two seeds in the East Region of the NCAA Tournament.  The Golden Eagles will play 15th seeded Vermont.

The Wisconsin Badgers men’s basketball team is heading to the National Invitational Tournament as a Number 3 seed and will face the Bradley Braves Tuesday night at 8:30. The bid comes after the Badgers were not selected to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2018.

No news on the Aaron Rodgers front. The 4-time MVP for the Green Bay Packers still hasn’t announced a decision on whether he is willing to go to the New York Jets in a trade or is considering retirement.  The Packers apparently are ready to move on and make Jordan Love their starting quarterback.

Bud Grant, the stoic and demanding Hall of Fame coach who took the Minnesota Vikings and their mighty Purple People Eaters defense to four Super Bowls in eight years and lost all of them, died Saturday. He was 95.
