From Wayne Mausser

Former Raiders quarterback Derek Carr has reportedly agreed to sign with the New Orleans Saints on Monday. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported it is a four-year deal, but the money attached has not been reported yet.

Carr spent his first nine NFL seasons with the Raiders, throwing 217 touchdown passes and going 63-79 in 142 starts. He made his last appearance on Christmas Eve in a Week 16 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers before being away from the team for the final two games.

Carr went on to post a goodbye message to Raiders fans shortly after the season ended. He had a no-trade clause in his contract, leading the team to release him on Feb. 14. While Carr met with the New York Jets and Carolina Panthers at the 2023 NFL combine, he ultimately decided to join the Saints.

The move to New Orleans reunites Carr with his first NFL head coach, Dennis Allen, who coached the Raiders to begin Carr’s rookie season and took over the head coaching job in New Orleans last season.

The Saints are coming off a 7-10 season in which Andy Dalton, Jameis Winston – reported to be a likely cap casualty – and Taysom Hill all spent time under center. They won’t be the only NFC South team with a change at QB in 2023, either. The Carolina Panthers and Atlanta Falcons possess top-10 picks in April’s NFL draft, while the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are moving past the Tom Brady era.

Las Vegas also has a top-10 pick (No. 7) in the draft, and the split with Carr indicates that pick could be used on a rookie QB.

The Milwaukee Bucks are at Orlando tonight to play the Magic. The Bucks are coming off a 117-111 road win Sunday night at Washington against the Wizards. Giannis Antetokounmpo led Milwaukee with a triple-double, scoring 23 points, grabbing 10 rebounds and posting a season-high 13 assists.

Jevon Carter added 20 points while shooting 6 of 10 from beyond the arc, and Jrue Holiday scored 19 in Milwaukee’s victory a night after a home loss to Philadelphia snapped a 16-game win streak. The Bucks (46-18) lead the Celtics by 1 ½ games in the Eastern Conference.

In G-League basketball, the Wisconsin Herd will head to the Lakeland Magic on Tuesday, March 7 with tip-off set for 9:30 a.m. CST.

Wisconsin has fired Tony Granato as men’s hockey coach after a second straight losing season. Granato posted a 105-129-16 overall mark and 65-87-2 Big Ten record during his seven seasons. Wisconsin ended a 13-23 season Saturday, losing to Michigan in the Big Ten quarterfinals.

Granato played at Wisconsin from 1983-87 before spending 13 seasons as an NHL player and 13 more as either an NHL head or assistant coach. He still ranks third in school history in career goals (100) and fourth in points (220).

But he couldn’t make Wisconsin a consistent winner after returning to  his alma mater as head coach..

Granato was named Big Ten coach of the year in 2017 and 2021, when the Badgers won their last conference title. But those were Wisconsin’s only two winning seasons in his seven years.  Wisconsin’s 13-23 record this season followed a 10-24-3 mark in the 2021-22 campaign.

UCLA is surging, both toward the postseason and in The Associated Press men’s college basketball poll.

While Houston was No. 1 for a third straight week in Monday’s poll, the Bruins rose two spots to No. 2 for their highest ranking of the season. UCLA (27-4) has won its last 10 games, including a showdown with highly ranked Arizona in the regular-season finale behind star Jamie Jaquez Jr. to complete a perfect home record.

The only change in the top five came with UCLA trading places with No. 4 Alabama, with Kansas remaining at No. 3 despite a loss at Texas in Saturday’s regular-season finale and the Boilermakers staying at fifth.

Marquette stayed at No. 6, followed by the Longhorns climbing two spots to No. 7. Arizona, Gonzaga and Baylor rounded out the top 10.

The Green Bay women’s basketball team is headed back to the Horizon League Championship tomorrow after outlasting No. 6 Purdue Fort Wayne in the semifinals, 69-65.  The Phoenix will take on No. 2 Cleveland State Tuesday at 11 a.m. CT at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum.

The Phoenix (27-4) had four players score in double figures, led by Cassie Schiltz, who had 17 points and seven rebounds.

Sydney Levy tacked on 14 points and four assists while Natalie McNearl had a near double-double in 20 minutes with 10 points and nine rebounds.

Green Bay grabbed 38 rebounds in Monday’s game compared to Purdue Fort Wayne’s 32, led by McNeal’s nine. The Phoenix also put in work on the offensive glass, turning 11 rebounds into six second chance points.

The Phoenix will play in its 25th Horizon League Championship game, Tuesday at 11 a.m. CT at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum. Green Bay is 19-5 in previous MCC/Horizon League Championship games.

In Cactus League baseball, the Brewers were off Monday.  Milwaukee is back in action today against the White Sox.  The Brewers are 4-6 overall while the Sox are 5-4.  Probable pitchers this afternoon are Corbin Burnes (0-1) for Milwaukee against Chicago’s Lance Lynn (0-0).  First pitch is at 2:05 CST.
