Ripon College Awarded Humanities Initiative Grant
A project to strengthen the humanities at Ripon College through regional collaboration has received a $150,000 Humanities Initiatives for College and Universities grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The grant will fund a three-year effort. Ripon College Professor of History Brian Bockelman says, “The Ultimate goal of this project is to build a robust, place-based eco-system of humanities education for our region.” He says the college’s conversations with Marian University were an initial step toward articulating a vision of geographic uniqueness and attracting students to programs that offer both a universal and a particular education. The three-year initiative is expected to involve approximately 15 faculty members at Ripon and Marian, up to a dozen community partners at area arts and humanities organizations stretching from Baraboo to Oshkosh, and three distinguished visiting scholars from Princeton University, Stanford University, and Cornell University. The grant is one of only two Humanities Initiatives grants awarded to Wisconsin colleges and universities in this cycle.

The Task Force was created to develop a comprehensive strategy to address the child care shortage and barriers to work in Fond du Lac County. Task force members represent businesses, non-profit and community organizations: child care providers: and local government. More than 20 businesses and organizations are represented on the task force. Some of those members include; the City of Ripon, the City of Waupun, Fond du Lac County, and the Ripon Area Chamber of Commerce. Task Force priorities include: Understanding the scope of the problem, defining the core issues, and identifying potential innovations and policy changes needed to move toward solutions. Made in Ripon
Ripon Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Mandy Kimes says a tour of a local manufacturer was an eye-opening experience for her. She says she is hoping to tour other local manufacturers and businesses to get an idea of what they make so she has a better understanding and can explain it well to others when she is promoting the community. She was invited to tour AFK Foundry and watched as molten steel was poured and cast into implements. One of her tour guides explained that people don’t realize how much of what they use in everyday life have parts that needed to be cast. Kimes says as small a community as Ripon is, it’s incredible how much is “Made in Ripon” and gets sent across the world.
Last Day At Diverse Options for Al Schraeder
Diverse Options President and CEO Al Schraeder says he wasn’t looking for another opportunity last December when he was offered one with Opportunities, Inc. After 27 years today is Schraeder’s last day with Diverse Options in Ripon, he starts as a Vice President at Opportunities, Inc. next Monday. Schraeder says a friend is the CEO of Opportunities, Inc and they were doing some restructuring and he was asked to provide some senior leadership to come in and oversee the services they provide to people. He says that worked its way into a job offer. He says Opportunities, Inc is similar to Diverse Options in its mission and the services it offers, but instead of providing services to about 300 people a year it provides them to about 3,000. Opportunities, Inc. is headquartered in Fort Atkinson with divisions in Beaver Dam, Janesville, Jefferson, Oconomowoc, and Watertown. Schrader says he is looking forward to meeting the team he will be working with but will miss the folks at Diverse Options.
