Ricky Stenhouse Jr. has had a rollercoaster career in which he had to fight to keep a job, lost his seat at a NASCAR powerhouse team and opened his 14th season mired in a five-year losing streak. To say this Daytona 500 was a milestone race was an understatement — for Stenhouse and for NASCAR.
Stenhouse won the Daytona 500 in double overtime and under caution on Sunday in the longest running of “The Great American Race.” The two overtimes pushed the 65th running of the race to a record 212 laps — a dozen laps beyond the scheduled distance and a whopping 530 miles.
It provided anxious moments before a landmark celebration: The first Daytona 500-winning team co-owned by a Black man and a woman.
Stenhouse’s win for JTG Daugherty Racing was the third of his career. JTG is the first single-car team to win the Daytona 500 since The Wood Brothers Racing did it with Trevor Bayne in 2011.
The team is owned by Tad and Jodi Geschickter along with former NBA player Brad Daugherty.
Joe Logano was second and Christopher Bell was third in a Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing and followed by Chris Buescher in a Ford for RFK Racing and pole-sitter Alex Bowman of Hendrick Motorsports in a Chevrolet. It marked the first time the pole-sitter has finished in the top five since Bill Elliott in 2001.
AJ Allmendinger was sixth for Kaulig Racing, Daniel Suarez seventh for Trackhouse Racing, and Ryan Blaney eighth for Team Penske. Ross Chastain of Trackhouse and Riley Herbst of Rick Ware Racing rounded out the top 10.
Action sports star Travis Pastrana finished 11th in his Daytona 500 debut, and Kevin Harvick was 12th in his final Daytona 500. Harvick is retiring at the end of the year.
Kyle Busch dropped to 0 for 18 in the Daytona 500, but contended for his new Richard Childress Racing team. He was the leader ahead of teammate Austin Dillon with three laps remaining in regulation when a spin by Daniel Suarez brought out the caution and sent the race to overtime. Busch wound up 19th after the race-ending crash in second overtime.
Seven-time NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson made his return to the series and ran inside the top 15 for most of the race. He was collected in one of the crashes in overtime and finished 31st. Johnson has returned from two years racing in the IndyCar Series as part owner of Legacy Motor Club and he plans to enter a handful of races.
Brad Keselowski led a race-high 42 laps, but finished 22nd. He declined to speak to reporters after dropping to 0 for 14 in a race he desperately wants to win.
Jayson Tatum put on a record-setting show, and made Giannis Antetokounmpo look like a genius.
Tatum scored an All-Star Game-record 55 points on his way to winning MVP honors, and Team Giannis ended LeBron James’ hold on All-Star captain supremacy by beating Team LeBron 184-175 in the NBA’s annual showcase exhibition on Sunday night.
Tatum had 27 points in the third quarter, another All-Star Game record for any period. He was the first pick by Antetokounmpo in the starters’ portion of the All-Star draft, and in the end, that pick proved to be the right one.
And the MVP award Tatum was given is named for Kobe Bryant, one of his heroes.
Tatum broke Anthony Davis’ All-Star record of 52 points. He was 22 of 31 from the floor, plus had 10 rebounds and six assists.
It was James’ first loss in six times as captain. Antetokounmpo improved to 1-2 in his All-Star captaincies, and became the first captain to hoist a new trophy presented to the winners of the All-Star Game.
Donovan Mitchell added 40 for Team Giannis, which got 26 points from Damian Lillard — including the game-winner to push his team past the target score.
Jaylen Brown scored 35 points and had 14 rebounds for Team LeBron, while Kyrie Irving had 32 points and 15 assists and Joel Embiid finished with 32 points.
The league had a ceremony before the second half to pay tribute to the three leading scorers in NBA history: No. 3 Karl Malone, No. 2 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and James, now the game’s career leader after he passed Abdul-Jabbar earlier this month.
With the number 38,388 displayed behind him, James then raised his hand to thank the fans for their ovation, hugged Abdul-Jabbar and Malone. He didn’t return to the game, his night ending with a right hand contusion.
He finished with 13 points, and said a chasedown block in the first half led to him getting a finger caught in the rim.
Mac McClung might have single-handedly restored the shine on a dunk contest that has been widely panned in recent years.
McClung, the 6-foot-2 Philadelphia guard on a two-way contract, defeated New Orleans’ Trey Murphy III in the finals of the dunk contest, culminating an NBA All-Star Saturday that may have finally answered the question as to whether what used to be the league’s signature event can be glitzy again.
The final score was McClung 100.0, Murphy 98.0.
Damian Lillard, the Portland star, won the 3-point contest by topping Indiana teammates Buddy Hield and Tyrese Haliburton in the final round. Lillard won the final round with 26 points. Hield had 25 and Haliburton scored 17.
Utah got a win to open All-Star Saturday night.
The Jazz — a roster composed of Utah players Jordan Clarkson, Walker Kessler and Collin Sexton — won the Skills Challenge on Saturday night, prevailing in two of the three competitions.
The Rooks were second, with Orlando’s Paolo Banchero, Detroit’s Jaden Ivey and Houston’s Jabari Smith Jr. getting 100 points.
The Antetokounmpos were third, with Thanasis Antetokounmpo, Alex Antetokounmpo and Jrue Holiday — a fill-in for injured Milwaukee Bucks teammate Giannis Antetokounmpo — getting shut out.
Next up was the team passing event, won by the Jazz — giving them 100 points — after they were the most accurate in a series of 35-foot outlet passes, 20-foot bounce passes and 25-foot chest passes.
It ended with the Team Shooting event — worth 200 points — with the Jazz prevailing there to clinch the win.
Jon Rahm won the Genesis Invitational Sunday by two strokes over Max Homa. Rahm shot a two-under final round to finish 17-under. Patrick Cantlay was three strokes back and Will Zalatoris finished four shots behind.
Cam Spencer scored 22 points and Clifford Omoruyi’s block of a shot attempt as time expired helped send Rutgers to a 58-57 win over Wisconsin on Saturday. The Scarlet Knights (17-10, 9-7 Big Ten) snapped a season-high, three-game losing streak.
In the frantic last 11.3 seconds following a Badgers timeout, Connor Essegian missed a runner in the lane and the ball got batted to Wisconsin’s Max Klesmit. Klesmit got cut off on a drive attempt at the right elbow, pivoted and threw to an open Essegian before Omoruyi sprinted, closed out and deflected Essegian’s shot attempt.
Aundre Hyatt threw down a dunk with 1:08 left to give Rutgers the lead. Wisconsin (15-11, 7-9) missed its final four shot attempts.
Rutgers was absent Caleb McConnell (9.7 points per game, 2.5 steals per game) due to back spasms during pre-game warmup.
Omoruyi scored 12 points and had eight rebounds and Hyatt grabbed nine rebounds.
Klesmit scored 11 points and Steven Crowl grabbed 11 rebounds for Wisconsin. Badgers’ leading scorer Chucky Hepburn (12.7 ppg) got into foul trouble early and never found an offensive rhythm scoring just six points on 2-for-7 shooting. Essegian (11.8 ppg) scored his only two points from the foul line and missed all 10 of his shot attempts.
Rutgers hosts Michigan on Thursday. Wisconsin hosts Iowa on Wednesday.
Ripon College 65, Knox College 53-Jaylen Mahone led the Red Hawks with 17 points.
Women’s College
Ripon College 64. Knox College 54-Bonnie Jensen led Ripon with 21 points.
The road to the Kohl Center in Madison got a little clearer for boys basketball teams around the state with with the WIAA releasing the playoff brackets on Sunday afternoon. Regionals start next Tuesday.
That includes undefeated De Pere, who has been ranked at the top of division one and received a sectional one-seed. On the other side of the bracket is two-seed Fond du Lac of the FVA. As well as FRCC runner-up Sheboygan North, who received a three-seed in the sectional.
De Pere’s first big challenge will likely come in the sectional semifinals, when they could face seventh-ranked Homestead. The Redbirds defeated Homestead on a neutral floor on January 28th, 64-41.
In division two, Fox Valley Lutheran is a regional one-seed fresh off their road win over Little Chute on Friday. A meeting with second-seeded Shawano is a good possibility coming up in the sectional semifinals with Medford receiving the other top-seed in Sectional One.
Top-ranked Brillion is a one-seed in their region in division three, and could face off with sixth ranked Xavier lurking on the other side. A big test for the Hawks could very well come in the sectional semifinals with Little Chute as a two-seed in the bottom half of the regional bracket.
In division four, Howards Grove and St. Mary’s Springs are on a collision course to meet in the sectional semifinals. Both teams have been ranked in the top five in the state for much of the year. Meanwhile, St. Mary Catholic, which entered last week ranked second in the state, received a one-seed in a separate sectional with Crivitz in the bottom half.
Some area seeds in Division 3 are #5 seed Wautoma hosting #12 Stanley Boyd, #9 Clintonville at #8 Omro and #12 Tomahawk at #5 Winneconne.
