Housing Development Needed in Berlin

The Berlin Common Council last week discussed use of the North Industrial Park. City Alderman Luke Dretske says they have the sewer and water service in place for the park, but they have to be realistic about its uses. He says Berlin doesn’t have the infrastructure, airports or highways that major industrial parks benefit from so they won’t be attracting a large business or manufacturer. He says they can focus on their strong suit being a bedroom community which provides the services that people need to live in the community. An economic development study recommended the City use some of the land in the industrial park for housing. Dretske says that’s a need both in the city and the county. He says the study also suggested using rezoning to subdivide properties in the city for more housing.

Plush Patrol

Will the “Plush Patrol” be coming to Ripon? The City’s new Parks and Recreation Director Ashton Zeien ran the parks and rec program in the City of Juneau before coming to Ripon. She says they ran a variety of programs there including youth and adult athletics, a 5K event, and Wine and Design which involved painting and sampling wines.  One of the most popular programs was the “Plush Patrol” which they ran in conjunction with the police department. Zeien says each week a family would bring in a stuffed animal which would go along on patrol as an honorary police officer with one of the real police officers. The officer would take pictures of the honorary police officer working alongside them. At the end of the day the kid that brought in the stuffed animal would get another stuffed animal along with a certificate recognizing the animal they brought in as an honorary police officer. Zeien says people just loved the program and so did the officers.

FDL County Flag Redesign

Fond du Lac County Flag.

Fond du Lac County Executive Sam Kaufman says the county flag has been present in the legislative chambers at the City-County Government Center in Fond du Lac since it was first created in the 1960s. He says many county supervisors were unaware of that until County Clerk Lisa Freiberg pointed it out. Kaufman says a contest to redesign the flag isn’t about replacing it, but rather giving it an update to more accurately reflect the county as it is today. The original flag was part of a 4-H project. Kaufman says the flag is a small piece of an effort to modernize the county, its facilities, and the services it provides to residents. To find out more about the contest to redesign the county flag and how to submit your idea call Stephanie Dahlke at 920-929-3154.
