The Bucks will try to extend their winning streak to 12 games tonight in Chicago against the Bulls. Milwaukee is coming off a 131-125 overtime victory Tuesday night against the Celtics as Jrue Holiday scored a career-high 40 points and Giannis Antetokounmpo added 36, points, 13 rebounds and nine assists. The Bucks (40-17) are one game behind the Celtics (42-17) in the Eastern Conference.
Marquette moved a step closer to earning its first conference title in a decade by turning a weakness into a strength: Rebounding.
Olivier-Maxence Prosper converted a putback with 1.6 seconds left and No. 11 Marquette edged No. 16 Xavier 69-68 on Wednesday night to extend its slim Big East lead.
After Kam Jones missed his driving layup attempt, Prosper used his right hand to tip in the offensive rebound and put the Golden Eagles back in front.
Marquette (21-6, 13-3), picked to finish ninth by the league’s coaches in the preseason poll, moved 1 1/2 games ahead of Xavier (19-7, 11-4), No. 24 Providence and No. 18 Creighton. The Golden Eagles haven’t claimed a conference championship since earning a share of the Big East crown in 2013, also the last year they won an NCAA Tournament game.
Marquette surged into conference title contention despite entering Wednesday with a minus-3.4 rebound margin that ranked 311th out of all Division I teams. In an 80-76 loss at Xavier on Jan. 15, Marquette was outrebounded 45-32. The Golden Eagles turned that around Wednesday.
Marquette got 17 points and a career-high six steals from Stevie Mitchell. Tyler Kolek scored 15 and Oso Ighodaro added 14. Prosper had seven points, all in the last five minutes.
Souley Boum fought through a sprained ankle to score 24 points for the Musketeers.
Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo is teaming up with his brothers once again on All-Star Saturday. Portland’s Damian Lillard is taking a third shot at the 3-point title, Indiana’s Buddy Hield will aim to win that one again and Philadelphia’s Mac McClung now can be a slam-dunk champion at the NBA and high school levels.
The NBA released the full list of participants for All-Star Saturday’s events in Salt Lake City — the Skills Competition, the 3-point contest and the dunk contest. It’ll be a particularly busy weekend for 11 players who are now slotted to be in multiple events during the three days of action in Utah.
Hield, the 2020 winner, is back to try to become the eighth player with multiple 3-point crowns. He’ll face his Indiana teammate Tyrese Haliburton, the Portland duo of Lillard and Anfernee Simons, Miami’s Tyler Herro, Sacramento’s Kevin Huerter, Utah’s Lauri Markkanen and Boston’s Jayson Tatum.
Huerter is one of four Kings picked to be part of the weekend.
Antetokounmpo is an All-Star captain, and will choose a team to oppose the squad that will be picked Sunday night by fellow captain LeBron James. But first, he’ll be teaming up with his brothers — Thanasis and Alex — in the Skills Challenge, just as he did in last year’s event at Cleveland. They’ll face two other teams, one from the host Utah Jazz and the other composed of three top picks in last year’s draft.
The Jazz will be represented by Jordan Clarkson, Walker Kessler and Collin Sexton. And Team Rooks is composed of No. 1 pick Paolo Banchero of Orlando, No. 3 pick Jabari Smith Jr. of Houston and No. 5 pick Jaden Ivey of Detroit.
It’s a four-round competition, the first three involve shooting, passing and a relay. The top two teams after those events will then shoot half-court shots to decide a winner.
On the men’s PGA Tour, Tiger Woods returns to action in the Genesis Invitational. It’s his first tournament since the PGA Championship last May. All of the other golf big-name players will be in action this weekend as well.
Congratulations to the Wautoma Hornets Christian Weiss on placing 2nd this weekend at wrestling regionals. He will be wrestling Saturday at sectionals in Wisconsin Dells.
Congratulations to the Wautoma girl’s basketball team. They received a 5 seed for the WIAA tournament and will play Mayville at home. The game will be played on 2/21/2023 at 7:00 p.m.
The Wisconsin Herd, NBA G League affiliate of the Milwaukee Bucks, lost to the Cleveland Charge 128-120. The Herd powered ahead to an early 20-12 lead before the Charge hit 13 unanswered points to secure the advantage at the end of the first quarter. Cleveland took charge in the second quarter creating a 15-point lead. The Herd cut down the Charge’s lead to 10 points at the half and at the end of the third quarter. The Herd battled back in the fourth quarter outscoring the Charge 35-33, but it wasn’t enough to grab the win. Lindell Wigginton led the Herd with 34 points while Rob Edwards added 26 points. Alize Johnson dominated the boards with a double-double of 25 points and 20 rebounds. Jamorko Pickett guided the Charge with 30 points and 11 rebounds followed by Mamadi Diakite with 23 points and 18 rebounds.
The Herd will return after the NBA All-Star Break to take on the Texas Legends on Friday, February 24th with tip-off set for 7:30 p.m. CST.
