Ice Conditions Vary For Sturgeon Season

A DNR Conservation Warden urges those planning on sturgeon spearing to check with a local fishing club before venturing out on the ice. Bill Hankee says ice conditions vary on Lake Winnebago and the Upriver Lakes. He says the clubs, which maintain the bridges and the roads on the ice monitor conditions. He recommends joining or donating the clubs to help them with that maintenance. He says it’s telling that some of the clubs aren’t putting out bridges and are encouraging the use of snowmobiles and ATVs on the ice. The sturgeon spearing season starts Saturday morning at 7 am. The season can run as long as 16 days depending on when a harvest cap is reached.

Congressman Grothman on Interest Rates

Congressman Glenn Grothman believes the Federal Reserve will continue to raise interest rates to help curb inflation. The federal lawmaker from Glenbeulah says higher rates aren’t just an issue for consumers, he notes the Federal Government is the biggest borrower because of its debt. Grothman feels we will have to go through several presidencies before inflation returns to a more reasonable rate, but he says it won’t while Joe Biden is president. He says interest rates reached as high as 20 percent during the inflationary period we saw in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s.  Wednesday New York Federal Reserve President John Williams said the U.S. central bank still has more interest rate rises ahead of it.
