1/6/23 Emergency SOS Feature Causing Increase in 911 Calls
6 January 2023 News
The Green Lake County Sheriff’s Office has posted instructions on their Facebook page about how to turn off the Emergency SOS feature on newer versions of Android smart phones following an increase in inadvertent 911 calls. Sheriff’s officials say they typically receive 30 misdials or inadvertent 911 calls a month, twice that amount during the summer months. Last month they received 146 misdials or an average of almost 5 per day. They say the Emergency SOS was an optional feature for Android 12 phones, but the feature has an “On” default on Android 13 phones. Anytime you press the power button 3 or 4 times it activities the Emergency SOS feature. That could happen while the phone is in your pocket, placed in a cup holder, or if children are playing around their parent’s phone. Apple phones also have the feature.
That is as much information as was posted on the Green Lake County Sheriff’s Department’s Facebook page.
