RCH Day Stabilization Unit

SSM Health’s new mental health outpatient day stabilization unit at Ripon Community Hospital could be this month. The new service is supported by a $158,000 Healthcare Infrastructure Capital Grant from the state’s Department of Administration. Tiffany Parker is the Director of Behavioral Health Hospital-Based Services for SSM Health’s Greater Fond du Lac Region. She says it will offer assistance, services, and support for up to 23 hours to individuals experiencing a mental health crisis. It can serve up to eight people at a time. Parker says the unit is the first of its kind in the state, but others will be popping up soon enough. Governor Evers was on hand in September for the unit’s ribbon-cutting ceremony. According to the National Alliance for Mental Illness, mental illness is very common. One in five people live with a mental health condition. With the high demand for psychiatry and outpatient mental health services the wait lists are six to eight months or longer.

Drug Recognition Experts

Green Lake County Chief Deputy Matt Vande Kolk says unfortunately it has become a necessity for law enforcement to have drug recognition experts to help combat instances of drugged driving. Vande Kolk says in November they had already surpassed the total number of drugged driving violations they had recorded for all of 2021. He says two of their deputies and a Green Lake police officer are trained drug recognition experts. He notes the training to become an expert does require some medical knowledge. He says they are also fortunate to have three dogs, two at the Sheriff’s Office and one with the Green Lake Police Department, that are also trained to detect drugs in a vehicle. Across the state there are 365 law enforcement officials who are trained drug recognition experts.

Funeral At Waupun City Hall Was The Right Thing To Do

Nancy Vanderkin

Waupun Mayor Rohn Bishop says holding a funeral last week at the City Hall Auditorium for Nancy Vanderkin was the appropriate thing to do for the longtime alderwoman and community supporter. He says it was as close as they could get to a state funeral. He notes in addition to 12 years on the Common Council, she was a longtime member of the Police and Fire Commission, was with a number of service clubs, and was instrumental in organizing Celebrate Waupun. He says her favorite role was on the Police and Fire Commission and her respect for them was reflected in the large turnout for her funeral. This month the Council will take a look at filling the vacancy on the Council created by her death. The person ultimately appointed to fill her remaining term will serve until the April 2024 election. Vanderkin was 74 years old.
