Thursday Sports

From Wayne Mausser

After having Wednesday off,  the Packers are back on the practice field today in preparation for Monday night’s game at Lambeau Field against the Los Angeles Rams.  Green Bay is 5-8 and in third place in the NFC North while the Rams, 4-9, are tied for last place with the Cardinals in the NFC West.

The Packers are coming off their bye week and still have a slim chance of making the playoffs, but need to win their last four games and then get help from some other teams.

The Bucks return to action tonight at Memphis.  Milwaukee is coming off a 128-111 home win over Golden State Tuesday night.  The Bucks, 20-7, are in second place in the Eastern Conference, one game behind Boston.  The Grizzlies are 18-9 and tied with the Pelicans for first in the Western Conference.

The Badgers men’s basketball team hosts Lehigh tonight at the Kohl Center.  Wisconsin, 8-2 overall and 2-0 in the Big Ten, won in overtime at Iowa last Sunday 78-75.

Wiscosnin will play Oklahome State in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl in Phoenix on December 27th.  It will be the 21st straight season the Badgers have made a bowl appearance.  Wisconsin finished the regular season at 6-6 and 4-5 in the Big Ten.

In Thursday Night Football San Francisco is at Seattle.  The 49ers, 9-4, are in first place in the NFC West, two games ahead of the Seattle.  San Francisco will be without the services quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo (foot) and wide receiver Deebo Samuel, (ankle/knee). Brock Purdy will start for the 49ers. The Seahawks, 7-6, are two games behind San Francisco in the division.

The Green Bay women’s basketball team knocked off in-state rival Wisconsin 70-60 on Wednesday night for their fourth straight win in the series. Maddy Schreiber led three Green Bay players in double figures with 19, while Bailey Butler had 15 and Sydney Levy chipped in 13.

The Phoenix shot 40 percent from the field, compared to 34.6 percent for Wisconsin, who was led by Julie Pospisilova’s 18 points. Green Bay led by one at half and outscored Wisconsin 41-32 in the second half.

The Milwaukee Brewers have acquired infielder Owen Miller from the Cleveland Guardians for a player to be named and cash.

Miller, 26, batted .243 with six homers, 51 RBIs, a .301 on-base percentage and .351 slugging percentage in 130 games with the Guardians last season. He primarily played first base but also made appearances at second base and third.

The Brewers made room for Miller on the 40-man roster by designating catcher Mario Feliciano for assignment.  Cleveland’s decision to trade Miller comes after the Guardians signed first baseman Josh Bell to a two-year, $33 million contract.

This represents a homecoming for Miller, who was born in the Milwaukee suburb of Mequon, Wisconsin. Miller’s ability to play multiple infield positions could help the Brewers make up for the loss of utilityman Jace Peterson, who signed a $9.5 million, two-year deal with the Oakland Athletics this week.

The Wisconsin Herd, the NBA G League affiliate of the Milwaukee Bucks, lost to the Fort Wayne Mad Ants 128-110. Wisconsin started on a hot streak but couldn’t secure the lead at the end of the first quarter. The Herd inched back but a 14-0 run by the Mad Ants in the third quarter to go up 80-60. The Herd battled back in the fourth quarter outscoring the Mad Ants 37-31, but it wasn’t enough to secure the win.

Brandon Randolph led the Herd with a career-high 25 points and seven rebounds while Lindell Wigginton added 21 points.

Trevelin Queen guided the Mad Ants with a double-double of 26 points and 10 rebounds while Justin Anderson and Gabe York added 21 each.

The Wisconsin Herd will host the Fort Wayne Mad Ants again on Friday, December 16th with tip-off set for 7:00 p.m. CST at Oshkosh Arena.
