Chucky Hepburn scored 13 points and Steven Crowl added 12 as Wisconsin handed No. 13 Maryland its first loss under coach Kevin Willard, 64-59 on Tuesday night.
Wisconsin (7-2, 1-0 Big Ten) opened a 58-45 lead with a 13-point run, capped by Crowl’s two free throws with 3:46 remaining. The Badgers hung on despite making just 15 of 25 free throws in the second half and no field goals over the final 4:03.
Jahmir Young scored 17 points and Julian Reese had 10 for Maryland (8-1, 1-1), which entered averaging 80.8 points per game and outscoring opponents by 19.8.
Young and Donald Carey hit late 3-pointers to get the Terrapins within 58-53, and Young made another 3 to make it 63-59, but Maryland never got within one possession in the closing stretch.
Crowl hit a short jumper that put Wisconsin in front 27-15 in the first half, but Maryland answered with an 11-point run, hitting four consecutive shots, including three from beyond the arc.
The Terps tied it 29-29 on Carey’s step-back 3-pointer with 52 seconds left in the half.
The Badgers improved to 6-0 this season when holding opponents to 60 points or fewer. Wisconsin is at Iowa on Sunday.
Despite reports over the weekend that Jim Leonhard would stay on with the Wisconsin Badgers, he tweeted Tuesday night that he will leave after the bowl game. Leonhard served as interim head coach before the school hired Luke Fickell to be the next head coach last week.
Leonhard thanked his alma mater and fans on Twitter.
“It has meant the world to me to be able to pour my heart and sould into the UW Football program over the last seven years. After discusssions with the my family and coach Fickell, I will remain the DC through the bowl game but no longer be a part of the staff after the conclusion of the 2022 season. It has been an honor to coach these young men and thank you to all the fans who supported us along the way. On Wisconsin!”
The Bucks are back in action tonight as they host the Sacramento Kings. Milwaukee is coming off a 109-102 win over the Magic on Monday as Giannis Antetokuompo scored 34 points to lead the way. Milwauee is 17-6 and in second ploce in the Eastern Conference while the Kings are 13-9 and in fourth place in Western Conference.
The Green Bay Packers have nominated running back Aaron Jones for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award.
Each NFL team picks a nominee who gives back to the community.

His A&A All the Way Foundation has had such an influence on the kids and families it serves. He is an amazing young man and a tremendous role model for all of our players.”
Jones grew up with two parents in the U.S. Army and he is affiliated with causes close to the military. Jones is a big part of the Packers’ Salute to Service and Huddle for Heroes. Jones has worked with the Boys & Girls Club in Green Bay and Milwaukee and also has worked with the Boys & Girls Club in Green Bay and Milwaukee and also hosts football camps for kids.
Jones and his brother Alvin are founders of the A&A All the Way Foundation. The charity is dedicated to helping children with basic needs and providing opportunities for recreation and fitness.
The Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year will be announced during NFL Honors on the Thursday before the Super Bowl. The Man of the Year will receive $250,000 for the charity of his choice.
All 32 nominees will receive up to $40,000 in their name to a charity of their choice. The Charity Challenge adds a $25,000 donation in the name of the player whose hashtag is shared the most on social media through January 8, 2023.
Neenah junior and five-star recruit Allie Ziebell is headed to one of the top women’s basketball programs in the country, the University of Conneticut. She announced her verbal commitment on Twitter Saturday.
The 6-foot guard is not only Neenah’s all-time leading scorer, but also led the state in scoring last season, which was only her sophomore year.
Through five games this season, she’s leading the Rockets in scoring, rebounding and assists. Ziebell is ranked fifth in the nation by ESPN for the class of 2024.
