Ehrenberg Praised For His Time as Ripon DPW Director

While he was giving the Ripon Common Council an update this week on the planting of trees in Barlow Park Director of Public Works Mike Ehrenberg found out how much his work with the city is appreciated. Ehrenberg is retiring on December 9th and Council members took the time to thank him for his service. Alderperson Jolene Schatzinger mentioned Ehrenberg leading the city after a major storm in July of last year that downed a number of trees. Alderperson Howard Hansen said he worked with Ehrenberg on parks issues and complimented him on the pride he took in the city’s parks. Ehrenberg in turn told the Council the future looks bright for the city and everything is looking up. He said he had told staff a few weeks ago that the city has to continue to improve and they will be part of that effort. Ehrenberg thanked the Council and urged them to move forward with the building of a new DPW building and shop which he says the city really needs. City Administrator Adam Sonntag also told the Council that they are taking applications for the DPW Director’s job and a new position for Parks and Recreation Director through December 9th.

Dickens Of A Christmas Kicks Off Tonight

Ripon hosts its 32nd Annual Dickens of a Christmas celebration this weekend. For Ripon Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Mandy Kimes it is her first Dickens as director. She says it will have all the traditional events associated with the celebration, but a few new twists. For example there will be a short theatrical reenactment of “A Christmas Carol” in the 100 block of Watson Street during the “Living Windows” display Saturday night.  Kimes says she caught an LED performance of the Fox Valley Fire Arts at the Paine Center in Oshkosh and invited them to perform following Friday night’s parade while there is Coca and Caroling on the Village Green. A full list of Dickens activities is available at the Chamber’s website. Things kick of tonight with a chili supper at the American Legion Hall from 3 to 6 pm. Proceeds will benefit the Ripon Food Pantry.

More About Safe Sleep For Infants

A pediatrician with SSM Health Regional Clinic says to avoid SIDs or deaths from unsafe sleep environments it is important that babies get their tummy time in while they are awake. Dr. Jeanne Lyke, who sees patients at Ripon Community Hospital, says nearly 3,600 babies under a year of age die each year in the United State while they are sleeping. She says about half of that number can be attributed to entrapment, suffocation, or strangulation. She says putting your baby to sleep on their back on a firm surface is the most important safe sleep practice. But she says it is also important that babies spend time on their tummy while they are awake. It will help them develop the strength they need to keep their head and face free while sleeping. She also recommends having the baby sleep in the same room as parents, but not in the same bed or on a couch while the child is breastfeeding and mother and child could fall asleep. Dr. Lyke says SIDS incidents drastically reduce after a baby becomes a year old. For more information on safe sleep for babies visit Healthy Children.org or First Candle.org.

Treehouse Central In Wautoma Needs New Van

Treehouse Central Wisconsin in Wautoma offers support for teens that need hope in their lives. Treehouse has been around for 40 years with over 60 sites nationwide. The chapter in Wautoma is the only one in Wisconsin. Brigette Henschel is the area director. She says they offer mentoring and conversation for teens in 7th through 12th grades. She says their goal is to teach teens that they are lovable, capable, and worthwhile. She says there can be a number of negative outcomes for teens that need hope in their lives. They use two vans to pick up teens and bring them to their site. Henschel notes most of their teens live out in rural areas of Waushara County. One of their vans has over 300,000 miles on it. She says they are sorely in need of updating their transportation and have set a $20,000 fundraising goal. Donations are tax deductible and can be made at the Treehouse Central Wisconsin.org website.
