Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers says he expects to play Sunday at Chicago after a rib injury knocked him out of a 40-33 loss at Philadelphia.
“I got good news with the scans yesterday, so I plan on playing this week,” Rodgers said Tuesday on “The Pat McAfee Show” on YouTube on SiriusXM.
Rodges left the game in the second half against the Eagles because of the rib injury. He already has been playing with a broken right thumb, an injury he sustained on the final play of a 27-22 loss to the New York Giants on Oct. 9.
“There was an earlier shot in the game that kind of rattled the ribcage,” Rodgers said “I was trying to stretch some things out at halftime a little bit and realized it probably wasn’t some sort of muscle injury. And I just got hit again in the third quarter and was just having a hard time breathing.”
Packers coach Matt LaFleur had said Monday that Rodgers was feeling better, but added the team would know more about the four-time MVP’s status in the next couple of days.
Rodgers said he wouldn’t be surprised if the injury limited his practice time.
The Packers (4-8) still have a slim chance of reaching the playoffs heading into their game with the Bears (3-9). Rodgers said after the Eagles game that he wanted to keep playing through these injuries as long as the Packers still have a chance of making the postseason.
Rodgers also offered praise Tuesday for Jordan Love, the 2020 first-round pick who took over for him in the Eagles game and went 6 of 9 for 113 yards with a touchdown.
“It was really nice to watch,” Rodgers said. “I feel like an older brother watching him do well. I care about the kid a lot.”
In other teams news, the Packers signed safety Innis Gaines to the active roster from the practice squad, released safety Johnathan Abram and signed tight end Nick Guggemos to the practice squad. The Packers had added Abram earlier this month when they claimed him off waivers from the Las Vegas Raiders, who had taken him with the 27th overall pick in the 2019 draft.
Christian Pulisic kicked the ball, scored the goal and then crashed into the goalkeeper, a collision that sent the American star to the hospital and the United States into the second round of the World Cup. More than an hour later, he contacted his teammates by FaceTime to join the celebration.
Pulisic’s 38th-minute goal held up, and the United States beat Iran 1-0 on Tuesday in their politically charged rematch to advance to the World Cup’s knockout stage.
“Every single player is ready to lay their body on the line to make sure this team is successful,” United States midfielder Weston McKennie said.
The Americans finished second in Group B with five points, two behind England, and will play the Netherlands on Saturday with the chance to reach the quarterfinals for the first time since 2002.
Pulisic was sprawled on the field and lying in the goal for about three minutes as he received treatment from the U.S. staff. He tried to continue playing but was substituted at the start of the second half with Brenden Aaronson and taken for abdominal scans. U.S. Soccer said Pulisic suffered a pelvic contusion and was day to day. He left the hospital and returned to the team hotel.
Back in the World Cup after missing the 2018 tournament, the U.S. opened with draws against Wales and England and needed a victory to reach the round of 16.
Iran finished third in the group with three points. The team has failed to advance in all six of its World Cup appearance
The U.S. is 1-4 against the Netherlands, all friendlies, overcoming a two-goal deficit to win 4-3 at Amsterdam in 2015.
The Bucks are back in action on the road against the New York Knicks. Milwauke is 14-5 and in second place in the Eastern Conference, two games behind the Boston Celtics. The Knicks come into the game at 10-11.
The Wisconsin Herd, the NBA G League affiliate of the Milwaukee Bucks, lost to the Grand Rapids Gold in overtime 129-122. The Gold forced a season-high 24 turnovers by the Herd resulting in 35 points. The Gold took an early lead at the end of the first quarter, but the Herd was able to battle back at the half. The Herd continued to dominate shooting 50% from the field during the third quarter. Ultimately the Gold outscored the Herd 41-28 in the fourth quarter and overtime to secure the win.
A.J. Green guided the Herd with 23 points, nine rebounds and four assists with Sandro Mamukelashvili adding 20 points and eight rebounds. Jontay Porter posted a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
For the fourth game in a row, the Herd allowed an opposing player to score 30 points. Adonis Arms scored 30 points followed by Jared Butler with 27 points.
The Herd will play the second game of the back-to-back series in Grand Rapids Wednesday night with tip-off set for 6:00 p.m. CST.
This year’s deer hunting season wrapped up Sunday, and preliminary totals show a sizeable increase in the number of animals harvested over last year.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says since bow hunting season opened on Sept. 17, hunters registered over 300,000 deer statewide, including 203,295 by gun hunters.
The number of deer harvested during gun season increased by 14.4% statewide over 2021. That includes a 14.7% increase in antlered deer bagged and a 14.1% increase in antlerless deer. That’s nearly double the 5-year average of 7.7% increases year-to-year.
The DNR says the biggest increase in the harvest came in the state’s two forest zones, with the central forest zone up nearly 20%. The central farmland zone, which includes much of Northeast Wisconsin, saw a 13.5% jump . Snow cover at the start of the season made deer more visible. So did another successful harvest: 75% of the state’s corn had been gathered, leaving deer less cover.
Wisconsin again proved to be a hunting destination, representing a $2 billion economic impact on communities across the state. That’s despite fewer hunters. License sales were down 1.6% from last year.
