Fire Reported In Markesan
The Grand River Fire District or Markesan Fire Department was dispatched early yesterday morning for a structure fire at N1914 County Highway A/S. The initial report noted that there were visible flames in a light fixture in an upstairs bathroom. Fire crews arrived and quickly pulled a hose line to the second floor of the structure. The fire was contained to that room. Some ceiling was pulled down, and the fire was quickly extinguished before it could spread. The cause of the fire was electrical. No injuries were reported. OSHA Cites Appleton Contractor For Safety Violations
An Appleton contractor is facing more than $349,000 in additional penalties for continuing to put employees at risk of dangerous fall hazards. Inspectors for the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration found those risks at two Town City Construction job sites in the Appleton area in May and June putting roofing workers at heights of 6 feet or greater which could cause serious or fatal injuries. OSHA has cited Town City Construction owner Hector Able Hernandez repeatedly for exposing employees to falls hazards. OSHA proposed $633,500 in penalties-still mostly unpaid-for similar violations found during 16 inspections since 2004. Following the inspections in Greenville on May 16th and Appleton on June 24th, OSHA cited Hernandez for three willful and two serious safety violations for failing to provide eye, head and fall protection and train workers on fall hazards.
Ripon Facility Master Plan
The Ripon Common Council Monday night got a final report on the facility master planning project for the City Hall and the Department of Public Works Building and garage. A representative of Short, Elliot, Hendrickson gave that report to the Council. Both structures are dated and departments using them need more space. City Administrator Adam Sonntag said the DPW garage has reached its end of life and the city officials have to get serious about building of a new structure making that decision sometime in the next six months to a year. But the cost of that project which includes demolition of the current facility would be expensive. Done in phases the estimated cost is $12.3 million. A DPW salt storage building would be kept. A renovation of City Hall would also be done in phases and has an estimated price tag of $3.2 million.
Judge Dorow Enters State Supreme Court Race
Waukesha County Circuit Court Judge Jennifer Dorow will hold an event today to officially launch her candidacy for the Wisconsin Supreme Court. Her husband Brian Dorow told the press Tuesday, “She’s in the race.” Dorow gained national notoriety while presiding over the trial for Darrell Brooks who was convicted of killing six people during the Waukesha Christmas parade last November. Dorow will be the second conservative candidate to enter the race, which also has two liberal judges running. The winner will replace a retiring conservative justice who is part of a 4 to 3 majority on the court.
Gun Deer Season
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says hunters harvested 203,295 deer during the nine-day gun season that concluded on Sunday. Since archery season opened on September 17th, hunters have registered 301,540 deer statewide which is up 14.4 percent from 2021 totals. The year-to-date sales for all deer licenses are down 1.6 percent from the same time last year. For the gun deer season just over 2,600 deer were taken in Dodge County, 2,320 in Fond du Lac County, 2,277 in Green Lake County, 5,849 in Waupaca County, 3,916 in Waushara County, and hunters took 1,047 deer in Winnebago County. All those totals were up from 2021. DNR officials say there were 8 hunting accidents during the season, including a fatal shooting in Green Lake County. The average number of hunting accidents for the last 10 gun deer seasons is 6.4, with zero fatalities during 6 of those 10 years.

Safe Sleep Suggestions
A pediatrician with SSM Health Regional Clinic says about 3,600 babies in the United States die each year because of unsafe sleep environment. Dr. Jeanne Lyke, who sees patients at Ripon Community Hospital, says about half of those deaths can be attributed to entrapment, suffocation, or strangulation. She says putting your baby to sleep on their back on a firm surface is the most important safe sleep practice. She says that practice since the 1980s has reduced the number of SIDS deaths by more than half, but there is still room for improvement. She recommends using sleep sacks or light layers of clothing on your baby because loose bedding or blankets could entrap or suffocate an infant. Dr. Lyke says SIDS incidents drastically reduce after a baby becomes a year old or are able to rollover on their own while sleeping. She also recommends having the baby sleep in the same room as parents, but not in the same bed. For more information about safe sleep for babies visit Healthy Children.org or First Candle.org.
Ripon Roar Days Was A Success
The Ripon Education Foundation’s Ripon Roar Days fundraiser was a success raising more than $107,000 to fund teaching grants, scholarships, and enhance educational opportunities for students. In its 25th year the Foundation set a goal of 250 donors during the campaign and easily eclipsed that number. Cindy Cody was the community engagement chair for the campaign and Jeanne Williams is the President of the Foundation’s Board of Directors they say a very small percentage of the donations help pay for administrative costs and the technology used on the campaign. Only 7 percent goes toward administrative costs. Cody says people can continue to give toward the Ripon Roar Days campaign through the end of year, but can give to the foundation throughout the year. In fact yesterday, Giving Tuesday, was an opportunity to do just that. To donate go to the Foundation’s website or send your donation to P.O. Box 395, Ripon, Wisconsin 54971.
Father Wally Film Coming To Ripon Friday
The Freeland Film Festival is bringing a documentary about Father Wally Kasuboski to Ripon this weekend. The film titled “From Mass to the Mountain” will be shown on Friday at 6 pm at the Marcus Theater. Admission is free. Evelyn Galster of Freeland says after Father Wally passed in July they wanted to do something to honor his legacy and particularly the improvements he brought to eastern Panama since the later 1980s. Water projects were a big part of that. Galster says she knows it is a busy weekend in Ripon with Dickens of a Christmas, but they are hoping people will turn out for the film. Galster says donations taken that evening will go toward a mission Father Wally started. She says they also have an online link for those who would rather see the film through a virtual platform.

Donations will help make the holidays brighter for area families in need. Thrasher officials also suggest while you’re in their lobby, take a moment to look at the beautiful art currently on display or visit their Harvest of Bargains Shop, an excellent spot for recycled, restored, and repurposed items—all decked out for the holidays. The Thrasher’s annex or lobby is open Mondays through Fridays from 10 am to 4 pm.
