Thursday Sports

From Wayne Mausser

Fresh off their overtime win against Mike McCarthy’s Cowboys, the 4-6 Green Bay Packers host the 6-3 Tennessee Titans at Lambeau Field.  Kickoff is at 7:15 p.m. but fans are encouraged to be in their seats by 7 p.m. to see something new.

It’s the third primetime game between these two teams. Coach Matt LaFleur is 10-1 playing primetime games on the home field, the best record in the NFL since 2019. That includes 9 straight wins at home in primetime.

On Wednesday’s injury report the Packers listed linebacker DeVondre Campbell (knee) and wide receiver Romeo Doubs (ankle) as out for tonight’s game. Cornerback Shemar Jean-Charles (ankle) is doubtful and left tackle David Bakhtiari (knee) along with guard/tackle Elgton Jenkins (knee) are questionable.

Newly-inducted Pro Football Hall of Famer LeRoy Butler will receive his Ring of Excellence and have his name enshrined in Lambeau Field’s ring of honor.

The pregame starts at 5:00 with the kickoff at 7:15 on FM 1023, The Bug.

Brook Lopez understands that playing alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo is going to create plenty of open looks.

His improved 3-point shooting is helping the Milwaukee Bucks’ 7-foot center capitalize more than ever. Lopez shot 7 for 9 from 3-point range and scored 29 points as the Bucks beat the skidding Cleveland Cavaliers 113-98 on Wednesday night.

“Obviously Giannis is so good, he’s going to draw so much attention,” Lopez said. “The rest of us just have to be ready when we’re open. We’re going to be open a lot because they load up so much, every team loads up so much. You’ve just got to be ready to be open, catch it and shoot it.”

Lopez has gone 35 of 90 from 3-point range through the first 14 games of the season. He’s shooting 38.9% from beyond the arc and making 2.5 3-pointers per game, putting him on pace to set career highs in both categories.

The Cavaliers have lost five straight games since racing to an 8-1 start that included eight straight wins.

Antetokounmpo had 16 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists for the Bucks. Jordan Nwora had a season-high 21 points to help the Bucks outscore the Cavaliers 45-20 in bench points. Lopez was one off his career high in 3-pointers. The 7-footer made eight 3-pointers against Miami on Nov. 11, 2018.

Donovan Mitchell and Darius Garland each had 23 points and Evan Mobley added 20 for the Cavaliers.

Milwaukee was missing Jrue Holiday (sprained right ankle), Grayson Allen (sprained right ankle) and Wesley Matthews (strained right hamstring). This is the fourth straight game Holiday has missed.

The Bucks already are without Khris Middleton (wrist), Pat Connaughton (calf) and Joe Ingles (knee), who have yet to make their season debuts.

Bobby Portis had 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Bucks. Jevon Carter added 11 points and eight assists.

The Bucks play at Philadelphia Friday night.

Houston Astros pitcher Justin Verlander won his third American League Cy Young Award on Thursday, joining a distinguished club with fewer than a dozen members throughout baseball history. He did so unanimously. And he did so under unprecedented circumstances — as a 39-year-old coming off Tommy John surgery, which kept him off a major league mound for most of the past two years.

Verlander, who recently helped the Astros capture their second World Series championship in five years, received all 30 first-place votes for the AL Cy Young Award by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America.

Seven games remain in the high school football season as the 46th WIAA state football championships kick off Thursday morning and end Friday evening, and three teams from Northeast Wisconsin remain alive for a title.
