From Wayne Mausser

De’Andre Hunter scored 24 points and Trae Young had 21 points and nine assists, leading the Atlanta Hawks to a 121-106 victory over Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks on Monday night.

Clint Capela added 19 points and 10 rebounds as Atlanta won for the fifth time in seven games. Dejounte Murray also scored 19, and John Collins had 16 points and nine boards.

Antetokounmpo, who missed the last two games and three of the last four with left knee soreness, scored 27 points in 31 minutes. The Bucks have lost three of four after a 9-0 start.

Atlanta led 94-80 entering the final period. Milwaukee scored eight consecutive points to close to 108-99 with 3:12 left. Antetokounmpo fouled out with 1:35 remaining, and Murray hit both free throws to make it 116-101.  It was the third meeting between the teams in 16 days. The Bucks suffered their first loss of the season at Atlanta a week ago.

MarJon Beauchamp had 20 points for the Bucks, who lost for the first time at home after seven victories.

Atlanta scored 34 points in the paint in the first half en route to a 63-50 lead at the break. The Hawks shot 56.3% in the first half, compared to 39.5% for the Bucks, who were just 3 of 14 from beyond the arc.

The Bucks host the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday.

In college basketball, the Badgers are back in action tonight,  hosting UW-Green Bay at the Kohl Center. Wisconsin is 2-0 on the season.

Elsewhere, Ripon College hosts UW-Platteville.  The Red Hawks are 1-0, opening the season with a 68-55 win last Friday over St. Norbert College.

The Packers coaches aren’t getting much sleep this week as they get ready for a quick turn-around and the Tennessee Titans Thursday night at Lambeau Field.  Coach Matt LaFleur said Monday he slept on his office couch Sunday night following Green Bay’s victory over the Dallas Cowboys which broke the Packers five-game losing streak.

“That’s just kind of the way it is. That’s the way I’ve done it every year. Whether it’s here or somewhere else. Just go right in and get to work,” said head coach Matt LaFleur.

One of the weapons the Packers will face is Titans running back Derek Henry, who’s just behind Saquon Barkely in the race for the NFL rushing title.  Green Bay has seen Henry since LaFleur came to Titletown. Henry nearly broke the century mark at Lambeau Field in 2020, but did not have a single carry of more than ten yards.  He’s averaging 4.6 yards per carry and the Packers are 26th in the league in rushing defense.

Defensive coordinator Joe Barry says, “It’s hard. You’ve got an unblocked guy. Come on man, make the tackle. It’s going to take five. It’s going to take six. It’s going to take gang tackling. It’s going to take swarm. It’s going to take effort. That’s something we preach every week, but definitely this week when you’re playing a guy like Henry.”

In Monday Night Football Washington ended the Eagles  8-0 start with a 32-21 win at Philadelphia.  The Eagles had a 14-7 lead at the end of the first quarter but The Commanders scored 13 points in the second quarter to take a 20-14 halftime lead.  Washington added a third-quarter field goal and then out-scored the Eagles 9-7 in the fourth quarter.

The Commanders Taylor Heinicke completed 17 of 29 passes for 211 yards and a touchdown.  Wide receiver Terry McLaurin had 8 catches for 128 yards.  The Commanders managed just 66 yards rushing on 23 carries.

After a quick start, the Eagles Jalen Hurts cooled off, completing 17 of 26 passes for 175 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.  Wide receiver Quez Watkins had 4 catches for 80 yards and DeVonta Smith and Dallas Goedert caught touchdown passes.  Mike Sanders led the Eagles rushing attack with 54 yards on 12 carries while Hurts scored a rushing touchdown.

The Commanders improve to 5-5 while the Eagles drop to 8-1 in the NFC East.

One of the three football players killed in the University of Virginia shooting Sunday night played football at the University of Wisconsin before transferring to UVA.

Devin Chandler came to Madison from the Charlotte area. One of his former coaches called him someone with great energy with an infectious smile who was a joy to coach.  Chandler was a member of the Badgers in 2020 and 2021, running back 10 kickoffs, making 2 receptions for 28 yards, and rushing one time for 18 yards.

After putting himself in the transfer portal, Chandler would go to Charlottesville as a junior, but his former coaches and teammates remember him fondly.

Wisconsin head coach Jim Leonhard wrote in part, “I was shocked and saddened to hear of Devin’s passing. He had a lasting impact on his teammates, even after he left U.W., which is a testament to the type of person he was.”

While the suspected shooter is in custody — Christopher Jones, a former football player at the University of Virginia — police have not yet revealed a motive for the shooting.
