Aaron Rodgers threw three touchdown passes to rookie Christian Watson and led a 55-yard drive in overtime to set up Mason Crosby’s game-winning field goal, and the Green Bay Packers stopped a five-game skid with a 31-28 win over former coach Mike McCarthy and the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday.
Green Bay (4-6) appeared well on its way to losing six straight games in the same season for the first time since 1988, trailing 28-14 in the fourth quarter before Rodgers led two long drives that ended with scoring passes to Watson.
McCarthy coached the Packers to their most recent Super Bowl title after the 2010 season and posted a 125-77-2 record with Green Bay before getting fired in 2018. This was his first game against the Packers since he took over as Dallas’ coach in 2020.
Rodgers was McCarthy’s quarterback for most of his time with the Packers. Their relationship grew strained in McCarthy’s later seasons, but they exchanged compliments over the last week and shared hugs before and after Sunday’s game.
The Cowboys (6-3) blew a 14-point lead heading into the fourth quarter for the first time in franchise history. They entered Sunday with a 195-0 record in such games, including playoffs.
McCarthy chose to go for it on fourth-and-3 from Green Bay’s 35 on the opening possession of overtime instead of trying a long field goal. Dak Prescott was pressured by Jarran Reed and threw a desperation pass to Tony Pollard that fell incomplete.
The Packers had third-and-1 from their own 44 on the ensuing drive when Rodgers threw across the middle to Allen Lazard, who caught the ball just beyond midfield and raced to the 20 for a 36-yard gain. The Packers then set things up for Crosby’s game-winning kick.
Green Bay’s Aaron Jones rushed for 138 yards and a touchdown.
Watson, a second-round pick from North Dakota State, finished with four catches for 107 yards and became the first Packers rookie since Keith Woodside in 1988 to have multiple touchdown catches in a game. His three TDs were the first of his NFL career.
Rodgers found Watson for a 39-yard score on fourth-and-7 with 13:23 left. They connected again on a game-tying 7-yard TD with 2:29 remaining.
Watson had a 58-yard touchdown — the Packers’ longest completion of the season — in the second quarter. He celebrated by doing a back flip in the end zone.
Dallas scored 21 straight points to take its 28-14 lead.
Prescott’s 5-yard pass to Dalton Schultz tied the game at 14-all with 8 seconds left in the first half. After a fumbled punt return by Amari Rodgers gave Dallas the ball at the Green Bay 45, Prescott hit CeeDee Lamb for a 30-yard gain to set up Tony Pollard’s 13-yard touchdown run with 7:14 left in the third.
Lamb capped the Cowboys’ next possession with a 35-yard touchdown reception.
Lamb finished with 11 catches for 150 yards and two touchdowns. Pollard ran for 115 yards and a score. Prescott went 27 of 46 for 265 yards, three TDs and two interceptions.
On the injury front for the Packers Green Bay’s defense was missing outside linebacker Rashan Gary (knee), linebacker De’Vondre Campbell (knee) and cornerback Eric Stokes (ankle/knee). The Packers placed Gary and Stokes on injured reserve after both players were hurt in a 15-9 loss at Detroit last week.
Elsewhere in the NFC North Sunday, in another overtime game, the Minnesota Vikings came back and pulled an upset at Buffalo against the Bils, 33-30. Minnesota came back from a 17-point deficit to improve an NFC North best 8-1 while the Bills fall to 6-3 and in third place behind the Dolphins and Jets in the AFC East.
For the third straight game, the Bills did not score a second-half touchdown and for the third straight game, quarterback Josh Allen threw a red-zone interception.There was also a fumble on a botched snap on the Bills own 1-yard game, when it appeared they had the game won. It wasn’t known if Allen would start because of an injury to his throwing elbow, but he gutted it out.
Viking quarterback Kirk Cousins was 30-5-0 for 357 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions. The game was tied at 30-all heading into the overtime. Justin Jefferson had 10 catches for 193 yards and a touchdown. It was highlighted by an improbable one-handed grab in the fourth quarter that saved Minnesota from certain defeat the first time around. On fourth-and-18 with two minutes to play, Jefferson hauled in the 50-50 ball with Bills cornerback Cam Lewis draped all over him. The spectacular 32-yard catch took Minnesota from its own 27-yard line to Buffalo’s 41, and extended the Vikings’ late-game hopes. Wide receiver Stefon Diggs had 12 catches for 118 yards and Gabriel Davis 6 receptions for 93 yards and a touchdown.Running back Dalvin Cook rushed 14 times for 119 yards and a touchdown.
The Bills Josh Allen was 29-43 for 330 yards, a touchdown and two interceptons. Allen also was Buffalo’s leading rusher with 84 yards on 6 rushes.
There was another upset in the NFC North as Detroit came back to win at Chicago over the Bears 31-30. The Bears game was tied at the half 10-10 but Chicago took a 24-10 lead at the end of the third quarter before the Lions, which had defeated the Packers the week before, stormed back.wtth 21 4th quarter points. Detroit’s Jared Goff was 19-26 for 236 yards and a touchdown. Ama-Ra St. Brown had 10 catches for 119 yards and former Packier Jamal Williams rushed for 59 yards on 16 carries including a game-winning 1-yard touchdown.
Bears quarterback Justin Fields was 12-20 for 167 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. He also led all rushers with 147 yards on 13 carries and scored twice. The Bears fall to 3-7 while the Lions imrprove to 3-6.
In Sunday Night Football the 49ers came back at home to beat the San Diego Chargers 22-16. San Francisco improves to 5-4 in the NFC West while San Diego drops to 5-4 in the AFC West.
In Monday Night Football undefeated Philadlelphia (8-0), hosts Washington (4-5.

Cooper DeJean returned an interception for a touchdown and set up another score with a 41-yard punt return as Iowa defeated Wisconsin 24-10 on Saturday.
The Hawkeyes (6-4, 4-3 Big Ten) moved into a tie for the Big Ten West lead with their third consecutive win. Iowa, ranked 129th nationally in total offense, had just 142 yards and averaged 2.1 yards per play, but took advantage of plays made by its defense and special teams.
“You’ve got to make plays when they present themselves,” Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said. “Our guys did a good job of that.”
“Any time they do that, we need to execute,” quarterback Spencer Petras said. “It’s a gift you have to take advantage of.”
DeJean, a sophomore cornerback who also had 10 tackles, had a 32-yard interceptions return late in the first half that Iowa a 14-3 lead.
“I was beaten a little bit, so I had to just make a play,” DeJean said. “Once I got it, it was all green from there.”
Then, with the Hawkeyes holding a 14-10 lead in the third quarter, DeJean’s punt return gave Iowa the ball at the Wisconsin 18-yard line. Five plays later Petras scored on a 1-yard dive.
DeJean was angry at himself for not getting a touchdown on his return and was especially unhappy that he was tackled by punter Andy Vujnovich.
Iowa’s first touchdown also followed a big special teams play in the second quarter. Deontae Craig blocked Vujuovich’s punt and Jay Higgins recovered at the Badgers 17-yard line. Kaleb Johnson scored on a 4-yard run two plays later to give Iowa a 7-3 lead.
“Things get close when we play great teams and special teams need to be a factor in the game,” Wisconsin interim head coach Jim Leonhard said. “Unfortunately, today it was a factor in the wrong direction for us.”
Wisconsin (5-5, 3-4), which had 227 yards of offense, scored first on a 32-yard field goal from Nate Van Zelst. Graham Mertz threw a 51-yard touchdown pass to Keontez Lewis with 52 seconds left in the first half to cut Iowa’s lead to 14-10.
Iowa’s Drew Stevens had a 44-yard field goal with 2:54 left in the game for the final points.
Petras, who threw for just 94 yards, was sacked six times.
Mertz threw for 176 yards but was sacked four times and lost a fumble along with the two interceptions.
The Hawkeyes won their 13th consecutive November game. Their last loss in the month was a 24-22 defeat at Wisconsin in 2019.
Wisconsin, which had won eight of the last 10 games against Iowa, was able to get some yardage against the Hawkeyes, who rank in the top 10 nationally in total defense, scoring defense, rushing defense and passing defense. But Mertz’s turnovers were costly.
This was an elimination game for the West Division lead, and Iowa came up with the biggest plays. The Hawkeyes are now part of the four-way tie for the lead with Illinois, Purdue and Minnesota, and they became bowl eligible.

Ripon College 82, Lawarence 0-The Red Hawks moved to 9-1 and 8-1 in the conference. Saturday maked the final regular season home game by Red Hawks’ head football coach and defensive coordinator Ron Ernst will be Saturday. Ernst, the winningest football coach in both the Midwest Conference and Ripon College history, is retiring after 32 years at the helm.
UW-Oshkosh 61, UW-Eau Claire 0. The Titnas finished the season and 6-4 and 4-3 in the conference.
In men’s college basketball Saturday, UW-Oshkosh won at Hope College, Michigan 67-56. The Titans improve to 2-1 They lost Friday night at Calvin, University, 59-56.
Jim Leonhard chose his words carefully but delivered them forcefully.
“I would never accuse any teams of tampering with your players,” Wisconsin’s interim head coach said after UW’s 24-10 loss to Iowa on Saturday, “but teams are tampering with other teams’ players.”
Leonhard was commenting on recent Internet rumors that tailback Braelon Allen was considering transferring to Michigan.
Allen refuted those rumors on 97.3 The Game in Milwaukee and sources close to the UW program recently told the Journal Sentinel that the team to monitor was USC, which signed several prominent transfers after the 2021 season.
Those sources told the Journal Sentinel Allen long ago decided he would finish the season at UW. Allen reiterated Saturday he plans to play for UW in 2023 if Leonhard is promoted to full-time head coach.
“Unfortunately we have to recruit our own team every day right now,” Leonhard said. “It is unfortunate to see where it’s at, but I have to continue to show a clear vision. I’ve mentioned it a number of times. The uncertainty is going to cause people to look and see what the best decisions for their future are.
“We have to be real about that as coaches. That is why we have conversations almost daily with our team about where we’re going, what the plan is and how we’re going to get there.”
Running back Braelon Allen, limited to 40 yards on 17 carries Saturday, addressed the rumors calmly and at length.
He said acknowledged he has a friend on Michigan’s team but added he has not had any contact with the program.
“That is honest truth,” Allen said. “I haven’t had any contact with them. The fact that rumor sprouted up is surprising to me… especially Michigan specifically.”
Allen acknowledged speculation will continue as long as UW goes without a permanent head coach in place.
“We’ve made it pretty clear as a team we want coach Leonhard to be our coach,” he said. “I made it pretty clear. That is just what it is.
“We want him to be our coach and we’re going to continue to play for him to get him that job.”
The Wisconsin Herd, the NBA G League affiliate of the Milwaukee Bucks, beat the Motor City Cruise in the Herd’s first overtime of the season 135-133. A very dominant offensive quarter lead to 36 points for the Herd but the Cruise answered with a 37-point fourth quarter. At the end of the fourth quarter, the Herd and the Cruise tied 128-128. The game entered a seven-point target score overtime for the first time in Herd history. Jordan Bone knocked down a free throw to win the game 135-133.
The Herd was led by Jontay Porter with a career and team high of 30 points, 3 assists and 6 rebounds. Jordan Bone added 18 points, 8 assists and 3 rebounds followed by Lindell Wigginton with 17 points, 7 assists, and 5 rebounds. Two-way player Sandro Mamukelashvili played in his first Herd game of the season posting 14 points, 3 assists, and 7 rebounds.
Two-way player for the Cruise, Buddy Boeheim led Motor City with 25 points and RJ Nembhard Jr. added 24 points.

Keldon Johnson scored 29 points, and the San Antonio Spurs stopped a five-game skid by topping the banged-up Milwaukee Bucks 111-93 on Friday night.
Devin Vassell had 22 points in San Antonio’s first win since Oct. 30. Jakob Poeltl added 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Milwaukee played without Giannis Antetokounmpo, Jrue Holiday, Kris Middleton, Pat Connaughton, Grayson Allen, Joe Ingles and A.J. Green due to health issues.
Jevon Carter scored 21 points for the Bucks, and Brook Lopez had 19. Bobby Portis finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds.
San Antonio was 12 for 31 on 3-pointers, including 5 for 8 by Johnson. The Spurs also shut out the Bucks’ fast break, holding a 21-0 advantage.
Milwaukee shot a season-low 33 percent from the field, which Popovich attributed to good defense and a depleted opponent.
The Spurs outscored the Bucks 28-17 in the fourth. Johnson made a 3-pointer and a floating jumper to make it 101-83 with 4:39 left.
The Bucks return home tonight, hosting the Atlanta Hawks.
