Crash Responder Safety Week

Governor Tony Evers has proclaimed this week as Crash Responder Safety Week. A crash occurs about every four minutes in Wisconsin. First responders often work just feet away from traffic and put their lives in danger every time they respond to a crash. Since 2017, more than 350 first responders have been injured while working inside their emergency vehicle or at the scene of a crash. Wisconsin’s Move Over Law has been in effect since 2001. The law requires drivers to shift lanes or slow down in order to provide a “safety zone” for a squad car, ambulance, fire truck, tow truck, utility vehicle, or highway maintenance vehicle that is stopped on the side of a road with its warning lights flashing. Last December Governor Evers signed a new law, expanding protections by banning cell phone use in an emergency response area and creating new penalties for drivers who injure or kill a worker on the side of the road.

Addressing Students Mental Well Being

In addition to the educational skills the Ripon Area School District teaches children, they are also on the lookout for their mental health well being too. District Superintendent Mary Whitrock says the pandemic added a lot of stress to the lives of students and staff. She says to combat that they’ve added staff and programming to address any issues. Additional staff includes reading interventionists, behavioral interventionists, and a Dean of Students and they have smaller class sizes to give them the time they need to help students out. Whitrock says elementary students are able to participate in friends’ groups, and through play, and problem solving they build coping skills that employers are looking for once they enter the workforce. She says it makes the school district a much stronger partner in the community.

Sober Party At Wautoma PAC

Sixth through eighth grade students from Wautoma, Wild Rose, and the Tri-County School Districts will be participating in a presentation at the McComb-Bruchs PAC at the Wautoma High School that challenges them to make good decisions about vaping, drugs, and alcohol. The presentation Wednesday will be given by Jake White the founder of Vive18 which he started while attending the UW-Oshkosh. White threw huge sober parties that gained national recognition for showing students alternatives to substance use. Bryan Wright of Dynamic Family Solutions worked with the Waushara County Health Department to bring White to Wautoma. Wright says Wednesday night at 6 pm at the McComb Brooks PAC White will give another presentation, but this one is for parents. Anyone is welcome to attend the nighttime session for parents but registration is appreciated by calling 1-920-787-6550.
