The Packers return to the practice field today as they prepare for the Dallas Cowboys and former Green Bay head coach Mike McCarthy Sunday afternoon at Lambeau Field. Greeen has lost five straight and the last three games on the road, so they hope being home can help them break their longest losing streak since Aarron Rodgers’ first year as a starter in 2008.
McCarthy was fired in the midst of a second consecutive losing season in 2018 after reaching the playoffs nine times in 10 years, with four trips to the NFC championship game and the 31-25 victory over Pittsburgh to end the 2010 season in the Super Bowl at the home of the Cowboys. It was a bittersweet ending in Titletown but after taking a year off, he was hired by Dallas.
It will be an emotional day for McCarthy who turns 59 this Thursday. He said he’s already addressed that with his players. As to how he’ll be received by the fans in Green Bay, McCarthy knows he’ll receive some cheers and boos as well.
“I’m going to give him a big ol’ hug, I can tell you that much,” Aaron Rodgers said Tuesday on his weekly appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show” on YouTube and SiriusXM.
When asked this week he missed about Green Bay, McCarthy eventually bowed his head and tapped his fingers on the podium in silence, fighting back the tears.
“The people,” he said. “Just the people.”
Pressed by reporters about how motivated he was to win, McCarthy smiled and said, “I really want to win the game. Is that enough?”
Dallas is 6-2 and coming off their bye week while Green Bay comes in at 3-6.
After having their season-opening nine game winning streak snapped Monday night in Atlanta, 117-98, by the Hawks, the Bucks resume their road strip tonight at Oklahoma. The Bucks are 9-1 while the Thunder are 4-6.
Kolten Wong is staying in Milwaukee. The Brewers have picked up the $10 million 2023 team option on the veteran second baseman. Wong, 32, batted .251 this season and had a career-high 15 homers to go along with 47 RBIs and 17 steals in 134 games. He had a .339 on-base percentage and .430 slugging percentage. But the two-time Gold Glove winner also had 17 errors to match his career high.
Wong spent his first eight seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals, who declined to exercise a $12.5 million option to keep him in 2021. The Brewers then signed him to a two-year, $18 million contract that included a $10 million team option for 2023.
The Brewers would have owed him a $2 million buyout if they hadn’t picked up his option.
In his first season in Milwaukee, Wong batted .272 with 14 homers, 50 RBIs and 12 steals in 116 games while helping the Brewers win the NL Central title. Wong had a .335 on-base percentage and .447 slugging percentage that year.
This represents the first major move the Brewers have made since Matt Arnold was promoted to president of baseball operations last month after David Stearns stepped down. Stearns remains with the organization in an advisory role.
The University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh men’s basketball team, ranked 3rd in the country in division 3, defeated Lawrence at home 76-63 in the season opener. Levi Borchert led four Titans in double figures with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Matthew Kaznikov paced the Vikings with 18 points.
The Ripon College men’s basketball team opens its season at home Friday night against St. Norbert College. Tipoff is at 7:00.
