Aaron Rodgers matched a career high with three interceptions and threw an incomplete pass on fourth down from the Detroit 17 in the final minute, letting the Lions hold on for a 15-9 win over the Green Bay Packers on Sunday in a matchup of slumping teams.
The Lions (2-6) ended a five-game losing streak.
The Packers (3-6) have lost five straight for the first time since 2008 when Rodgers, their four-time NFL MVP, was a first-year starter.
Detroit tried to seal the victory late in the fourth when coach Dan Campbell went for it on fourth-and-3 from the Green Bay 43. Jared Goff’s pass was incomplete.
Rodgers failed to take advantage. He did convert a fourth-and-2 with an off-balance lob to Samori Toure, who fumbled out of bounds at the Detroit 17. Rodgers, the two-time reigning NFL MVP, threw four straight incomplete passes to end a lousy game overall. He was 23 of 42 for 291 yards with a TD and had three interceptions for the fifth time in his career.
Goff was 14 of 26 for 137 yards with touchdown passes to Shane Zylstra and James Mitchell, a pair of tight ends that took advantage of an increased role after Detroit dealt standout tight end T.J. Hockenson to Minnesota.
Campbell desperately needed the win. The gambling coach made some calls that worked out and some that didn’t. He went for it on fourth-and-1 from the Packers 7 on the opening possession and turned it over on downs after Goff was hit as he tried to complete a pass.
Rodgers threw interceptions in the end zone on his first two possessions. Kerby Joseph picked off the first one on a deflected pass and Aidan Hutchinson intercepted the next on a fourth-down pass toward left tackle David Bakhtiari.
Campbell made a call on Green Bay’s next possession that panned out, winning a challenge that overturned a Green Bay catch on fourth down.
Detroit took advantage, breaking a scoreless tie with Goff’s 1-yard touchown pass to an elevated Zylstra early in the second quarter. Jamaal Williams ran for a 2-point conversion after a running-into-the-kicker penalty.
Goff threw an interception early in the third quarter and Rodgers gave it back two snaps later, getting picked off at the Lions 3 by Joseph again.
Rodgers responded with a 20-yard touchdown pass to Allen Lazard, but his 2-point conversion pass to him was broken up by Jeff Okudah, allowing the Lions to lead 8-6.
Goff gave Detroit a nine-point lead with his second touchdown pass, a 3-yard throw to rookie tight end James Mitchell.
Green Bay stalled at the Lions 7 on the ensuing drive and had to settle for Mason Crosby’s 25-yard field goal that cut its deficit to six midway through the fourth quarter.
On the injury front, the banged up Packers took more hits: WR Romeo Doubs (ankle), RB Aaron Jones (ankle), CB Eric Stokes (knee, ankle), DE Rashan Gary (knee) WR Christian Watson (concussion) and LB Krys Barnes (concssuion) were injured during the game. Starting LB De’Vondre Campbell (knee) was inactive.
The Packers are back home t his Sunday hosting Mike McCarthy and the Dallas Cowboys (6-2). Dallas had their bye week.
Elswhere in the NFC North Sunday the Vikings stormed back with 13 fourth quarter points to win at Washington 20-1`7. Minnesotal moves to 7-1 in the division. In the other division game, Miami held on to win at Chicago (3-6) 35-32. The Bears and Packers are tied for second in the division at 3-6.
In Sunday Night Football it was a wild one in Kansas City as the Chiefs won in overtime over the Tennessee Titans 20-17. The Chiefs tied the game late in regulation with a touchdown and two-point conversion to send the game into overtime.
In Monday Night Football Baltimore is at New Orleans.
Wisconsin’s players are making a strong argument that interim head coach Jim Leonhard deserves to have the job for keeps.
Isaac Guerendo ran for an 89-yard touchdown and combined with Braelon Allen for 233 yards rushing as Wisconsin defeated Maryland 23-10 on Saturday. Wisconsin (5-4, 3-3 Big Ten) improved to 3-1 under Leonhard, who was prmoted from defensive coordiantor after the firing of Paul Chyrst last month.
“Of course, I think there’s nobody more deserving than him,” said outside linebacker Nick Herbig, who had two of Wisconsin’s five sacks. “It blows my mind that he’s not the (permanent) head coach yet.”
With each team throwing for just 70 yards amid windy and rainy conditions, Wisconsin’s superior ground attack made the difference.
Allen rushed for 119 yards on 23 carries and gave the Badgers the lead for good with a 9-yard touchdown that opened the scoring late in the first period. Guerendo ran 12 times for a career-high 114 yards, including the 89-yard score that made it 14-0 in the second quarter.
“It didn’t seem as though they were as affected by the elements as we were,” Maryland coach Mike Locksley said. “That starts with me as the head coach.”
Guerendo said the Badgers prepared all week for the likelihood of poor weather. Wisconsin outrushed Maryland 278-112.
Guerendo delivered the play of the day in the second quarter as he put Wisconsin ahead 14-0 by cutting to his right and racing down the Badgers’ sideline while carefully staying inbounds.
“Mr. Tightrope himself,” quarterback Graham Mertz quipped. “That was definitely fun.”
Wide receiver Chimere Dike provided some exceptional downfield blocking to help Guerendo complete the fifth-longest run from scrimmage in program history. The school record is owned by Allen, who had a 96-yard touchdown in a season-opening 38-0 victory over Illinois State.
Nate Van Zelst provided the rest of Wisconsin’s points by going 3 of 4 on field-goal attempts.
Wisconsin’s defense capitalized on the elements to bother Maryland quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa all day. Wisconsin ended Maryland’s string of 10 straight games in which the Terrapins had scored at least 27 points.
Although he entered Saturday having completed 72.5% of his passes to rank fourth among all Football Bowl Subdivision players, Tagovailoa went just 10 of 23 against the Badgers. The lone touchdown for Maryland (6-3, 3-3) came on a 5-yard completion from Tagovailoa to Tai Felton with 57 seconds left in the game.
Tagovailoa had missed Maryland’s most recent game – a 31-24 victory over Northweste4rn two weeks ago – with a knee injury. Tagovailoa said the knee wasn’t a factor in his struggles on Saturday.
Neither team threw the ball particularly well due to the weather. Mertz was 5 of 18.
Wisconsin’s defense benefited from the return of Herbig and safety Hunter Wohler.
Herbig had missed Wisconsin’s 35-24 victory over Purdue two weeks ago with a knee issue, while Wohler hadn’t played since breaking his fibula in the season opener. Wohler improved his Big Ten-leading sack total to eight and Wohler had his first career interception.
Wisconsin’s two straight wins have raised hope the Badgers can produce the type of late-season surge that assures Leonhard remains in charge next year.
Wisconsin plays at Iowa which won Saturday on the road at Purdue 24-3.
In area college football action Saturday, Ripon College lost at Monmouth College 39-31. It was the Red Hawks first loss of the season as they fall to 8-1 and 7-1 in conference play. Ripon hosts St. Lawrence this Saturday.
Elsewhere, UW-Oshkosh dominated at UW-Stevens Point, winning 45-0. The Titans improve to 5-4 overall and 4-04 in the confernce. Oshkosh closes out the season Saturday at UW-Eau Claire.
Lawrence University lost at home to the University of Chcago, 60-0.
St, Norbert College (6-3, 5-2) beat Eureka College 20-7 and host Concordia University of Chicago Saturday.
Brook Lopez scored 25 points and the Milwaukee Bucks extended their season-opening winning streak to a franchise record nine games with Giannis Antetokounmpo on the bench, beating the Oklahoma City Thunder 108-94 Saturday night.
Antetokounmpo sat out for the first time this season. He was listed as “questionable” with left knee soreness after recording his first triple-double of the season a night earlier in Minnesota. He did not go through warmups ahead of the game, and head coach Mike Budenholzer said before that game that the league’s second-leading scorer at 32.6 points per game would get the night off.
With Antetokounmpo out, Lopez led Milwaukee on 10-of-16 shooting that included four of the Bucks’ 17 3-pointers. Jevon Carter and Grayson Allen each added five 3s and finished with 18 points and 19 points, respectively. Bobby Portis notched fifth double-double of the season with 12 points and 21 rebounds. Jrue Holiday also finished with a double-double, scoring 10 points with 13 assists.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander connected on 7 of 16 shots and led Oklahoma City with 18 points. Josh Giddey scored 15 points and Jeremiah Robinson-Earl 12.
After finishing the opening quarter tied at 34, the Thunder trailed by as many as 24 before hitting four 3-pointers in the closing minutes of the third. Oklahoma City opened the fourth on a 7-2 run that cut Milwaukee’s lead to 95-85 with 10:22 to play.
The Bucks responded with an 11-2 run over the next three minutes to put the game away.
The Bucks are at At Atlanta on Monday to take on the Hawks.
The Astros wrapped up the World Series with a 4-1 victory over the Phillies Saturday night in game six at Houston. It was the Astros second championship in the last six years and was manager Dusty Baker’s first Championship in 25 years as manager. The Phillies led 1-0 when Houston erupted for four runs in the sixth inning, capped by Yordan Alverez’ three-run homer. Framber Valdez went six innings, giving up one run on Kyle Schwarber’s solo homer in the tolp of the sixith and just two hits. Zach Wheeler went five innings and took the loss for the Phillies.
