Waupun Schools Referendum

Waupun School District voters will have a referendum before them next month. The school district is seeking permission to exceed its state-imposed revenue cap by $980,000 a year for three years. Most school districts have felt a pinch in their budgets because the state froze the level of state aid during the past two-year budget cycle. Some of the districts have been able to make up the difference through the federal aid that was sent out because of the pandemic. If Waupun voters approve the referendum the district’s mill rate would be $7.28. If it isn’t the mill rate would be $6.48. Both of those mill rates are lower than the current mill rate of $7.63.  The district has two more information sessions about the referendum. They are tonight at 5:30 pm at the SAGES Charter School Library in Fox Lake and tomorrow morning at 11 at the Waupun Senior Center.

US Presidents And Narcissism

Ripon College Assistant Professor of Politic Science John Harden was involved in an interesting study that ranked U.S. Presidents according to their level of narcissism. The study covered U.S. Presidents from 1897 to 2009 so it did not include Presidents Barack Obama, Donald Trump and Joe Biden. The study was published in the Journal of Conflict Resolution and drew the attention of Newsweek magazine. The top five in the study were Lyndon Johnson, Teddy Roosevelt, Richard Nixon, Franklin D Roosevelt, and Bill Clinton. Harden says had they been ranked Obama and Trump would probably have been ranked in the top half of the study. But he says there are different types of narcissists and LBJ who was proud of how well-endowed he was and wasn’t afraid to show it, took the top spot. Harden says to make sure his rankings were feasible he showed them to an American History Professor whose reaction confirmed he was on the right track. Harden completed part of his research while he was with Ohio State University.

An artist from Wautoma swept the Wisconsin Wild Turkey, Pheasant and Waterfowl stamp design contest. DNR officials say a total of 34 pieces were submitted this year with judging taking place at the Wisconsin Waterfowl Expo in Oshkosh on August 27th.  Wautoma resident Sam Timm won first place in all three categories. His wild turkey painting features a tom in strut with two hens. His pheasant design depicts two rooster pheasants in a farmland scene, and his waterfowl design shows a pair of buffleheads in flight over the water, based on a memory of a particular duck hunt that he had on Lake Puckaway. Timm is a self-taught artist.
