COVID 19 Insurance
The U.S. Government will discontinue paying for COVID-19 vaccinations by the end of the year. That’s when Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance will take up the burden. Former Ripon Community COVID-19 Task Force member Jeff Puhlmann-Becker says he can understand allowing the drug companies to profit from the vaccines and the government wanting to keep its own expenses down, but not everyone has insurance which will put some at risk. A few weeks ago President Biden made the statement that COVID was over, but then added that it was still a threat. Meanwhile the newer Bivalent COVID-19 vaccine which provides stronger protection is just becoming available.
RASD Referendum
The closing of Tax Incremental District #4 in Ripon’s north Industrial Park will create $14 million in new property value, which will help the Ripon Area School District keep the tax rate low for a referendum on the November 8th ballot. Voters in the Ripon Area School District will be asked to approve an operational referendum to exceed the District’s revenue cap by $850,000 a year for 6 years beginning with the current 2022-23 school year. District Business Manager Jonah Adams says that and state aid increasing in the second year of the state budget will put the tax levy at an all-time low of $8.15 compared to the current rate of $8.27.
District officials are addressing community groups about the referendum. District Superintendent Mary Whitrock will be doing a presentation for Senior Citizens during a lunch at St. Catherine Sienna on Friday, October 21st.
Discussion On Indigenous Right To Vote
Ellen Sorensen of the League of Women Voters of the Ripon Area will be the moderator for a discussion on the Indigenous Right to Vote next Tuesday at 6:30 pm at the Kresge Little Theater, East Hall, on the Ripon College campus. Renee Gralewicz, an elder and peacemaker for the Brothertown Nation and Maria Haskins, a regional tribal organizer in the Lac Court Oreilles, Oneida and Stockbridge communities, will discuss strategies to expand the U.S. indigenous right to vote and put them into historical context. Sorensen says most people do not realize that the 20th Amendment to the Constitution did not give the right to vote to everyone. The League is teaming with the Center for Politics and The People, and the Center for Diversity and Inclusion to host the presentation. Sorensen says she saw something similar during a league presentation in Appleton and believed it would be good to bring it to Ripon.

The project offers a great opportunity for students to enhance their leadership and literacy skills while examining Oshkosh’s past. During the open house, students will lead brief presentations about their projects; attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and explore the projects in a self-guided tour format.
