Friday Sports

From Wayne Mausser

The Packers are in London today getting ready for their first international game Sunday against the New York Giants.  The Packers practiced in Green Bay Thursday and then flew out last evening.  Both teams are 3-1 on the season.  The Packers defense will be challenged up front by the Giants offensive line and need to stop the NFL’s leading rusher Saquon Barkley.  Barkley has rushed for a league-best 463 yards, averaging 5.5 yards a carry. He’s coming off a 463 yard effort in a 20-12 win over the Bears Sunday.  The Giants quarterback is still uncertain. Starter Daniel Jones sprained his left ankle against the Bears, though he is practicing on a limited basis. His backup Tyrod Taylor is in concussion protocol. The Giants also have Davis Webb on their practice squad.

Cornerback Jaire Alexander saw full participation in Thursday’s practice after suffering a groin injury and missing the Patriots game. Defensive lineman DeVonte Wyatt was the only player on Thursday’s injury report who did not practice. He injured a quadricep.

The Packers will practice today in London.

Green Bay leads the all-time series 34-26-2. In their last meeting in 2019, the Packers won 31-13 in East Rutherford.

Sunday’s game begins at 8:30 CDT and can be heard on FM 1023, The Bug.

In Thursday Night Football in Denver, the Colts beat the Broncos 12-9 in overtime in a defensive game that featured all field goals. Chase McLaughlin kicked a 48-yard field goal to win it. Colts quarterback Matt Ryan was 26 of 41 for 251 yards and two interceptions.  Deon Jackson led the Indianapolis rushing attack with 62 yards on 13 carries and Alec Pierce caught 8 passes for 81 yards.  Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson was 21 of 39 for 274 yards and was picked off twice. Melvin Gordon gained 54 yards on 15 carries and Courtland Sutton had 5 receptions for 74 yards. Indianapolis improves to 2-2-1 while Denver drops to 2-3.

MLB’s Wild Card round of the playoffs begins tonight as Tampa Bay plays at Cleveland and Seattle is at Toronto in the American League.  In the National League Philadelphia is at St. Louis and the Mets host the Padres.
