The Packers (3-1) were back on the practice field on Wednesday getting ready for the Giants Sunday at London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The Packers defense will face a strong Giants rushing attack led by Saquon Barkley. Barkley has rushed for 463 yards and is coming off a 146-yard effort in a 20-12 victory over the Bears. Barkley is gaining 5.5 yards per carry, a significant jump from the 3.7 he averaged last season.
The Packers meanwhile fortified their front seven by adding veteran free-agent tackle Jarran Reed and drafting Georgia linebacker Quay Walker and Georgia defensive lineman Devonte Wyatt with their two first-round picks.
Kenny Clark, a two-time Pro Bowler, has called this the deepest front seven he’s played on since joining the Packers in 2016. The Packers (3-1) rank fifth in the league in total defense and seventh in scoring defense. Yet they’re still having trouble against the run. They’ve given up 4.97 yards per carry to rank 24th out of 32 teams.
Chicago’s David Montgomery rushed for 122 yards on only 15 carries in a 27-10 loss at Green Bay on Sept. 18. The Packers limited Tampa Bay’s Leonard Fournette to 35 yards on 12 carries the following week, but their run defense took a step back again last weekend.
New England’s Damien Harris and Rhamondre Stevenson led a 167-yard rushing attack that gained 5.1 yards per attempt to help the Patriots force overtime before the Packers survived 27-24.
The Giants (3-1) head into London with an uncertain quarterback situation. Starter Daniel Jones sprained his left ankle against the Bears, though he did practice on a limited basis Wednesday. Backup Tyrod Taylor is in concussion protocol. The Giants also have Davis Webb on the practice squad.
The Packers have several injury concerns.
Veteran safety Adrian Amos left the Patriots game with a concussion and didn’t practice Wednesday. Rudy Ford, acquired before the season primarily to boost the special teams, filled in for Amos at safety against New England and had seven tackles.
They also must prepare for this test while dealing with the logistical challenges that come with playing their first international game.
The Packers released their injury report Wednesday. CB Jaire Alexander (groin), OT David Bakhtiari (knee), S Tariq Carpenter (abdomen), OG/OT Elgton Jenkins (knee), WR Allen Lazard (ankle), C Josh Myers (foot) and DL Devonte Wyatt (quadriceps) were limited practice participants Wednesday. Alexander sat out the Patriots game.
The Packers will practice today and then later leave for London.
In Thursday Night Football Indianapolis (1-2-1) is at Denver (2-2).
Josh Rojas and Corbin Carroll hit back-to-back home runs in the ninth inning and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Milwaukee Brewers 4-2 Wednesday to close out the season.
Milwaukee starter Corbin Burnes crossed the 200-inning threshold for the first time. The reigning NL Cy Young winner worked three perfect innings and fanned five to finish with a career-high 243 strikeouts. Burnes became the first Brewers pitcher to lead the league in strikeouts.
Along with his strikeout mark, Burnes went 12-8 to set a career high for wins. He also set personal marks with 33 starts and 21 quality starts while posting a 2.94 ERA and 0.97 WHIP, which were just slightly higher than a year ago.
Arizona starter Merrill Kelly struck out seven over six innings as he surpassed the 200-inning mark for the first time in his career. He allowed one run and four hits.
Rowdy Tellez hit his team-leading 35th home run, breaking a 1-1 tie with a solo drive in the Milwaukee eighth off Sean Poppen (2-2).
Christian Walker led off the Arizona ninth with his third hit and Rojas homered off Trevor Gott (3-3). Carroll followed with his fourth homer of the season.
Kevin Ginkel worked a perfect ninth for his first save.
Milwaukee finished 87-75, down from 95-67 last season, when the Brewers won the NL Central before falling to the eventual World Series champion Braves in the NL Division Series.
The Brewers drew 18,765 to their regular-season finale and finished the year with a total attendance of 2,422,460, a significant drop from the 2,923,333 fans who came through the turnstiles in 2019, the last season before COVID-19 restrictions. It was the lowest season attendance for Milwaukee since it drew 2,314,614 in 2016.
The Wild Card round of the playoffs begins Friday as Tampa Bay plays at Cleveland and Seattle is at Toronto in the American League. In the National League Philadelphia is at St. Louis and the Mets host the Padres.
The Wisconsin Herd, NBA G League affiliate of the Milwaukee Bucks, is inviting singers and musicians of all genres to audition for the opportunity to perform the national anthem at Herd home games during the 2022-23 season. Open call auditions will be held at Oshkosh Arena on Thursday, Oct. 6, from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m.
Candidates will register online or on -site and will audition in the order in which they arrive. Performers are only required to audition once.
Auditions are open to singers and musicians of all ages, however, individuals under the age of 18 will need permission from a legal guardian. Those auditioning must perform the national anthem in its entirety to be considered. The Canadian national anthem can also be performed.
