Eric Lauer pitched six innings of no-hit ball before getting removed from the game in the Milwaukee Brewers’ 3-0 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday night. Jake Cousins and Peter Strzelecki worked the final three innings of the one-hit shutout.
Milwaukee’s no-hit bid provided at least some sense of drama to an otherwise meaningless game. The Brewers were eliminated from playoff contention Monday night when the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Houston Astros 3-0 t o clinch their first postseason berth since 2011.
Lauer (11-7) struck out seven, walked four and committed an error while throwing 97 pitches. Lauer’s highest pitch count of the season was 108, in a 2-1 loss at San Francisco on July 16.
Jake Cousins took over for Lauer at the start of the seventh and allowed Josh Rojas’ leadoff single to right center. Cousins retired the next three batters and pitched around a one-out walk in a scoreless eighth inning.
Strzelecki retired the side in order in the ninth to earn his first career save.
Milwaukee’s Luis Urías went 3 of 4 with a homer and an RBI double.
Garrett Mitchell also homered as Milwaukee gained a measure of revenge against Zac Gallen, who allowed only two hits and one walk over seven innings in a 5-1 victory over the Brewers exactly a month ago. That Sept. 4 outing marked Gallen’s sixth consecutive start in which he worked at least six innings without allowing a run, tying a major-league record. This time, Gallen (12-4) struck out six but gave up five hits, three walks and three runs in five innings.
Arizona starts RHP Merrill Kelly (13-8, 3.43 ERA) and Milwaukee goes with Corbin Burnes (12-8, 2.98) in the season finale for both teams Wednesday. First pitch is at 3:10 and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.
Aaron Judge hit his 62nd home run of the season Tuesday night, breaking Roger Maris’ American League record and setting what some fans consider baseball’s “clean” standard. After slamming his helmet in a rare show of frustration when he went without a homer in the first game of the doubleheader against the Rangers in Texas, Judge hit the third pitch of the nightcap into the first row of seats in left field. Barry Bonds holds the major league record of 73 home runs, set with the San Francisco Giants in 2001.
The Atlanta Braves beat the Miami Marlins 2-1 Tuesday night to take their fifth straight National League East title and finish the first leg of a trek they hope leads them to a second straight World Series crown.
Elsewhere in the NL Central on Tuesday the Cardinals edged the Pirates 8-7 and the Reds nipped the Cubs 3-2.
The Packers return to the practice field today getting ready for the Giants Sunday morning in London. The team leaves Thursday for England.
In other news, the Packers made a roster move Tuesday, signing linebacker Eric Wilson off the Saints’ practice squad. Wilson is a sixth-year player who originally signed with the Vikings in 2017.
He has appeared in 78 regular-season games with 27 starts, recording 254 tackles, eight sacks, four interceptions, nine passes defensed, a forced fumble and two fumble recoveries. Wilson brings special teams experience, tallying 26 tackles, a blocked punt, a blocked extra point, a forced fumble and fumble recovery.
Two anglers are busted for cheating during a fishing tournament late last week on Lake Erie in Ohio. Video of the incident has gone viral.
Video circulating on social media shows the winning moment where the five fish caught weighed in at more than 33 pounds. The problem is, the tournament’s organizer felt the fish “looked smaller” than what they weighed.
This video show five fish, caught by two anglers, are sliced open after winning the tournament to look for any signs of cheating. Inside the fish were filets from other fish and several lead weights.
