It has been just over a year since a fatal crash on State Highway 23 near Green Lake County Highway W and Sheriff’s officials are still looking for a possible witness. That man driving a red SUV was rear-ended by a black SUV at the intersection of State Highways 23 and 49 minutes before the black SUV was involved in the fatal accident with another SUV. Forty-four-year-old Jessica Knueppel of Sparta, and formerly of Fond du Lac, was charged this past Monday with second degree reckless homicide, homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle, and second degree recklessly endangering safety. Fifty-one-year-old Steven La Tour of Appleton was killed in the accident. Meanwhile the man in the red SUV is still out there. Green Lake County Chief Deputy Matt Vande Kolk says he had an Agnesian or SSM Health visitor’s sticker on the window of his car. Vande Kolk says he may be able to provide them with more information for their case. Anyone with information is asked to call the Green Lake County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-438-8436. Berlin ATV/UTV Ordinance
The Berlin Common Council this past month passed an ordinance allowing the use of ATV and UTVs on city streets. It is based on an ordinance that the City of Waupun is using. Berlin Alderperson Luke Dretske says some residents wondered why they needed an ordinance since a referendum three years ago turned down the use of ATV and UTVs in the city. So he asked for an amendment that would put in a sunset clause that would end the ordinance after two years and stage a referendum on ATV and UTV use during the November 2024 election. Dretske says although they have an ordinance in place for ATV and UTV use in the City of Berlin it will not go into effect until the appropriate signage is put up.
Senator Johnson On Tax Breaks Criticism
U.S. Senator Ron Johnson says he is weary of campaign ads running against him about a tax break passed through the Senate and Congress that he and rich corporations supposedly benefitted from. The federal lawmaker from Oshkosh says in fact the tax reform passed by the then Republican –controlled House and Senate kept many businesses afloat during the pandemic. Johnson says the things he learned as a businessman actually helped in legislation that gave businesses and millions of tax-filers tax cuts that helped them stay competitive. Johnson faces Lieutenant Governor Mandella Barnes in November’s U.S. Senate election.
