Waupun Fire Chief Staying Put

Friday Waupun’s Police and Fire Commission met to reinstate him as the city’s Fire Chief and Director of Emergency Management. City Administrator Kathy Schlieve cited several factors leading to the reversal, including a strong focus on retention of top talent across all city departments, and two recently announced grant awards that the city received to strengthen EMS capacity that fall within the responsibilities of that position. DeMaa has been with the Waupun Fire Department for 20 years, the last eight years in the dual role of fire chief and emergency management director.  He has had a lead role in the development of the city’s Emergency Medical Responder program.

Act Of Kindness In Campbellsport Saves A Life

A kindness extended to a visitor in Campbellsport last Monday may have saved the Fond du Lac woman’s life. Campbellsport Police Chief Tom Dornbrook says the woman stopped at Ty’s Place to get some breadsticks. She was on her way to Milwaukee to visit her child at Children’s Hospital. Restaurant employees Laura Muraski and Stacey Stoffel noticed later the woman was slumped behind the wheel of her vehicle and appeared to be sleeping. They asked if she needed an ambulance and she said no. They checked on her several more times, each time she refused getting an ambulance. Eventually they called 911 and Chief Dornbrook responded. He says she was obviously in a lot of pain and told him she had been in an accident about two weeks before. He told her he wasn’t going to let her drive that way and was able to get the name of an uncle out of her. The uncle, who is a retired EMT, convinced her she needed an ambulance. Chief Dornbrook says it turns out the woman was seriously ill and was hospitalized. He says it’s a good example of what Campbellsport is all about, a small community reaching out and caring about another person.

Garbage Cans In The Road

The Dodge County Sheriff’s Office is asking residents to be vigilant after they received at least three complaints of garbage cans being hit by vehicles on County Highway P in the town of Rubicon. Someone had intentionally moved garbage cans onto the county highway putting the safety of those traveling the roadway at risk. Deputies are watching for such dangers, but Sheriff Dale Schmidt is asking residents to report garbage cans or other obstructions on a road so a deputy can remove it. They would also appreciate any tips about those who are responsible for that type of activity.

Grothman Introduces Employee Tax Deduction Bill

Congressman Glenn Grothman recently introduced a bill that would restore an employee tax deduction. The federal lawmaker from Glenbeulah explains that a Republican tax cut bill five years ago cut taxes for most people except the very wealthy and did away with an employee tax deduction.  He says some people for example construction workers who can spend months on the road have job-related expenses that they should be able to deduct from their taxes. He would like to restore the tax deduction but not at the same level it was at five years ago. He feels 85 percent of the original level would be fair to those employees.

Third Friday Count

The Ripon Area School District recently got a key piece of information in helping it determine revenue for annual budgets. Like every school district in the state the District has to take an enrollment count on the third Friday of September and report those numbers back to the state. District Business Manager Jonah Adams says that information will help them determine the revenue limits for the District. He says that number plus the summer school membership gives them the enrollment for the year. They then multiple that with the revenue allowed per student to set the revenue limit. He says the state uses a district’s three year rolling average for enrollment to determine the revenue limit, which can help you out if your enrollment numbers are down during one of those years. The District will get other information in the next month that will help it finalize this year’s budget and tax levy.
