Child Killed In Columbia County Accident

A four-year-old child was killed after being struck by a passing car on Haynes Road in Columbia County’s town of Marcellon Wednesday afternoon. Sheriff’s officials say the child was riding on a farm wagon and jumped down from it onto the roadway. A passing motorist struck the child. Emergency services were immediately dispatched to the scene. First responders began performing lifesaving measures. After exhaustive measures were taken, attempts to revive the child were unsuccessful. A 47-year-old woman from Pardeeville was driving the vehicle that hit the child. She cooperated with investigators at the scene of the crash. The investigation continues. The name of the child will not be released.

Bicyclist Killed In Calumet County Accident

Calumet County Sheriff’s officials say a 60-year-old Menasha man was killed when his bicycle was hit by a vehicle on Old Highway Road near Lakeview Court in the Village of Harrison Thursday morning. Deputies responded to the scene shortly after 7 am. The man passed away before deputies and first responders arrived. Investigators say both the vehicle and bicyclist were heading west on Old Highway Road when the bicyclist was struck from behind. The brightness of the sun may have been a contributing factor in the crash. The 16-year-old Menasha girl driving the vehicle cooperated with the investigation. Names were not released.

FDL County Meat Processor Recalling Meats

A Fond du Lac County meat processor has issued a voluntary recall for a variety of meat products. Salchert’s Meats in St. Cloud is advising consumers that products purchased on or before September 14th from its retail location are included in the recall. The affected products include smoked chicken frozen and vacuum sealed, dried beef and beef jerky. State inspectors say evidence shows the product was produced without an approved formula and it was not produced under an appropriate food safety plan. No illnesses have been reported.

Oshkosh Bridge Repair Delayed Again

The state’s Department of Transportation tells us repairs to the Oregon/Jackson Street bridge scheduled to begin next Monday in Oshkosh have now been postponed due to material delays from the manufacturer and the manufacturer’s distributor. The components to fix the failed gear box were scheduled for delivery this week. The manufacturer now anticipates delivery of components by November 11th. The cost estimate for the repairs is $136,000.  The bridge is currently closed to vehicle and pedestrian traffic after a bridge inspector discovered damaged gear teeth in the gearbox on the south leaf span during a routine inspection on May 25th. A subsequent investigation revealed additional damage in the gearbox that extended the manufacturing process to build the additional parts.

Unemployment Rates

Unemployment rates changed slightly for area counties remaining steady or falling or rising by a tenth or two-tenths of a percentage point in August. According to federal labor statistics Dodge County’s rate was slightly lower at 2.8 percent, Fond du Lac and Winnebago counties jobless rates both held steady at 3 percent. Waupaca County’s unemployment rate increased to 3.3 percent, Waushara County’s to 3.4 percent, and Green Lake County’s was at 3.5 percent. The City of Oshkosh had a 3.1 percent jobless rate and the City of Fond du Lac had 3.2 percent. Sixty-three of Wisconsin’s 72 counties saw their unemployment rates decrease or stay the same over the last month.

SSM Health Treffert Studios Being Constructed

Progress is being made on the construction of the new SSM Health Treffert Studios in Fond du Lac. The studios will be located on the Moraine Park Technical College campus. The 8,500-square-foot space will provide opportunities for neurodiverse young adults to cultivate their talents, hone their employment skills, and express themselves through music, entertainment, blogs, vlogs, and other multimedia platforms. Dr. Matt Doll is the Director of Behavioral Health Community-Based Services for SSM Health Greater Fond du Lac Region.  He says progress is being made on construction of the studios which should be open for use in the late fall. Once complete the facility will have a small stage and recording studios that will provide courses in the arts, STEM, drama, gaming and more for those on the autism spectrum, that have Savant abilities, and other mental health needs. A $2.75 million grant from the Agnesian HealthCare Foundation is helping with construction and start-up costs.

MPTC Referendum

A $55 million referendum Moraine Park Technical College is putting before votes in November will allow the college to upgrade facilities and address training for needs in the workforce. In addition to two major projects at its Fond du Lac campus Moraine Park hopes to build a 46,000 square foot addition for its welding and fabrication program at the West Bend campus. Moraine Park President Bonnie Baerwald says it would also allow them to eliminate a $64,000 a year lease they pay for a property in the Village of Jackson where they house some of their programming. She says they could also add some new programming. Contingent on passing the referendum they are also negotiating the purchase of property in Dodge County where they would build a facility to help the nearly 50 fire departments in that part of the Moraine Park District with training needs be they for ongoing fire firefighters, paramedics or EMTs. Baerwald says they are also considering adding a new course called fire-medic.

Harvest Fest In Green Lake This Weekend

Green Lake is ready for the celebration of the Golden Days Harvest Fest this Saturday and Sunday. The Golden Days part of the festival name was added in honor of the city’s 175th anniversary this year. Green Lake Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Lisa Meier says one change is they are shutting down Mill Street to through traffic for the festival. All attendees and participants will be able to park on city streets or at the Green Lake Area School District. Vehicles should enter the City of Green Lake on either South Lawson or South Street and park at the Green Lake County Fairgrounds Free parking lot. A shuttle bus will be available for attendees to be transported into the festival square. Activities on Saturday will include an antique tractor show, the Taste of Green Lake, a Craft Fair, Farmers Market, Cow Chip Bingo, Live Music, a parade, and the popular bed races. Sunday also has a full slate of activities including the Classic Car Show, a Kid’s Pedal Pull, Kid’s Show and much more.
