Max Scherzer pitched six perfect innings for the New York Mets in his return from the injured list Monday night before Milwaukee Brewers star Christian Yelich doubled in the seventh off reliever Tylor Megill. It made no difference as the Mets won 7-2 at American Family Field.
Trying for his 200th career win as the NL East-leading Mets look to clinch a playoff spot, the 38-year-old Scherzer struck out nine of the 18 batters he faced. He threw only 68 pitches, but that was as far as New York let him go in his first start in 16 days.
Making his first major league relief appearance after 27 starts, Megill entered to start the seventh with the Mets ahead 5-0 and gave up a leadoff double to Yelich on his second pitch. Megill also was activated from the IL earlier in the day.
With the victory, New York secures its first postseason berth in six years.
The three-time Cy Young Award winner exited his previous start Sept. 3 with fatigue on his left side and went on the IL with oblique irritation. He spent time on the injured list earlier this season with a left oblique strain.
Pete Alonso hit a three-run homer off reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Corbin Burnes (10-8) and leads the NL with 118 RBI’s as the Mets won their fifth straight to wrap up at least one of the three National League wild cards. They lead the NL East by one game over defending World Series champion, Atlanta, which beat Washington 5-2 at home.
Rowdy Tellez hit a two-run homer off Megill in the seventh, his 32nd.
The loss dropped Milwaukee 8 1/2 games behind first-place St. Louis in the NL Central and 2 1/2 games back of Philadelphia for the third NL wild card. The Cardinals and Phillies were idle. The Brewers had won two of three games against the Yankees in Milwaukee over the weekend.
The middle game of the series is Tuesday night. LHP Aaron Ashby (2-10, 4.58 ERA) will return from a stint on the IL with left shoulder inflammation to start a bullpen game for Milwaukee. New York goes with RHP Carlos Carrasco (15-6, 3.70). He gave up one run over six innings in each of his last two starts, striking out 17 total batters. First pitch is at 6:40 and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.
Elsewhere in the NL Central Monday the Marlins pounded the Cubs 10-3. The Brewers drop to 8 ½ games behind the division-leading Cardinals. Milwaukee is also 2 ½ games behind the Phillies and three games in back of the Padres for the final Wild Card spot.
The Packers are off today after beating the Bears 27-10 Sunday night at Lambeau Field. Green Bay (1-1) is at Tampa Bay (2-0) this Sunday in a quarterback matchup between Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady.
There were two games in Monday Night Football. In the first game Buffalo (2-0) pounded Tennessee (0-2) 41-7 as Josh Allen threw four touchdowns, three of them to Stefon Diggs. On the night Allen completed 26 of 38 passes for 317 yards while Diggs caught 12 passes for 148 yards. The Titans Ryan Tannehill completed 11 of 20 passes for 117 yards and was picked off twice.
In the second game Philadelphia (2-0) won at home over Minnesota (1-1) 24-7. The Eagles Jalen Hurts completed 26 of 31 passes for 333 yards, one touchdown and had one interception. The Vikings Kirk Cousins was 27 of 46 for 221 yards and a touchdown while throwing three interceptions.
Meanwhile, if you attended the Packers game Sunday night against the Bears, you may have noticed duplicate charges on your credit or debit card after purchasing food or drinks at Lambeau Field.
The Packers released a statement about the charges Monday afternoon, informing fans that the pending duplicate charges will not be completed. The team said that FreedomPay — the payment processor used by the Packers’ food and beverage provider, Delaware North — is currently voiding all duplicate transactions before they are processed.
Some fans are hoping a cash option returns to Lambeau, especially after the duplicate charges. The stadium became completely cashless in 2020.
The Packers say the duplicate charges are due to a worldwide FreedomPay issue. Anyone with ongoing issues in the next few days should contact GBPaymentSupport@delawarenorth.com.
