Sports for Wednesday

From Wayne Mausser

Andrew McCutchen homered and drove in three and the Milwaukee Brewers used eight pitchers in an 8-4 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday night.

The Brewers moved within seven games of the NL Central-leading Cardinals.

Down three starters to injuries, the taxed Brewers staff was stretched even further when starter Matt Bush left after just 15 pitches because of right groin discomfort. Bush was the starter in what the club had already designated as a bullpen game.

Luis Perdomo (2-0) was the winner, allowing one run in three innings. Perdomo, Brad Boxberger, Hoby Milner, Justin Topa, Taylor Rogers and Brent Suter combined to retire 20 of 22 batters from the third inning on

McCutchen hit his 17th homer of the season, a two-run blast off Jordan Montgomery in the fifth, to break a 4-all tie. Christian Yelich added to the lead by getting hit by Packy Naughton’s pitch with the bases loaded in the sixth.  Hunter Renfroe had a pair of hits including an RBI single in the eighth.

The Brewers took a 2-0 lead in the first on RBI doubles from Willy Adames and McCutchen. Adames tied it with an RBI single in the second and Yelich drove in another on a fielder’s choice.

It was the worst start in eight tries as a Cardinal for Montgomery (8-4), who was acquired at the trade deadline from the New York Yankees. Montgomery allowed six runs, four earned, and gave up seven hits while striking out six.

Nolan Arenado had a two-run double in the first and Albert Pujols added an RBI single to give the Cardinals a short-lived 3-2 lead.

Tommy Edman’s RBI single in the second tied the game at 4-4. Edman has a career-high 14 game hitting streak.

Cardinals RHP Adam Wainwright (10-9, 3.33 ERA) will start the second of a two-game series against the Brewers and RHP Corbin Burnes (10-6, 2.93 ERA). Wainwright and catcher Yadier Molina are expected to start game No. 325 together as batterymates, which would break the all-time record set by the Detroit Tigers duo Mickey Lolich and Bill Freehan (1963-1975). Burnes is 2-0 with a 0.43 ERA in three starts against St. Louis this season.  First pitch is at 6:45 and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.

Elsewhere in the NL Central Tuesday the Pirates took a doubleheader from the Reds,  6-1 and 1-0 and the Cubs downed the Mets 4-1. The Brewers trail the Padres by two games in the race for the final Wild Card spot and are seven games behind the Cardinals in the division.

The New York Yankees Aaron Judge continues his pursuit of Roger Maris’ 61 homers in the regular season as he hit his 56th and 57th in a 10 inning 7-6 victory over the Boston Red Sox Tuesday night at Fenway Park.  At 57, Judge has 20 more homers than anyone else in the Majorss and his 123 RBI’s is 9  more than the Guardians’ Jose Ramirez.  Judge’s  three-hit performance raised his average to .310, nine points behind AL leader Luis Arraez (.319) of the Twins.

The Packers are back on the practice field today in preparation for Sunday night’s game at Lambeau Field against the Bears. Green Bay suffered a season-opening 23-7 loss at Minnesota Sunday while the Bears upset the 49ers on a soggy Soldier Field 19-10.

This marked the second straight year the Packers didn’t play most of their starters in any exhibition games and lost convincingly in their season opener. LaFleur said Monday the two factors aren’t necessarily related and noted the Vikings also rested most of their starters in the preseason.

“Obviously it didn’t hurt them,” LaFleur said. “So maybe we’re doing something wrong in practice, whatever it may be. But certainly it’s disappointing, I thought our guys were locked in, ready to go.”

The Packers averaged over 6 yards per carry, with Aaron Jones running for 49 yards on five attempts and A.J. Dillon running 10 times for 45 yards. Dillon also had five catches for 46 yards, both team highs. The problem was the Packers didn’t get the ball enough to their two dynamic running backs.

“We’ve got to get them more involved, whether it’s in the run game, pass game, however it may be,” LaFleur said after the game.

Aaron Rodgers completed 22 of 34 passes for 195 yards and an interception. Allen Lazard, the leading receiver this year for Green Bay, didn’t play because of an ankle injury. Starting tackles David Bakhtiari and Elgton Jenkins, were also inactive.

In other team news, the Packers on Tuesday signed tackle Caleb Jones from the practice squad to the active roster and placed linebacker Krys Barnes on injured reserve for at least four weeks.

An investigative report by Mississippi Today revealed Tuesday that former Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant helped former NFL quarterback Brett Favre obtain welfare funds in order to help build a new volleyball center at the University of Southern Mississippi.

The news organization reviewed text messages from 2017 and 2019 that were filed Monday in the state of Mississippi’s civil lawsuit over misspent welfare funds. The texts were filed by an attorney representing Nancy New, who has already pleaded guilty to 13 felony counts of bribery, fraud and racketeering for her role in the welfare scheme. New was the founder of the Mississippi Community Education Center, which was tasked with spending tens of millions in federal welfare funds to help the state.

State auditors determined nonprofit leaders misspent at least $77 million in welfare funds in the largest case of public fraud in Mississippi history.

The texts show Favre, New and Bryant discussing how to divert at least $5 million in welfare funds to build a volleyball stadium at Southern Miss. Favre played football at Southern Miss, and his daughter was a volleyball player there at the time some of the texts were sent.

Robert Sarver, owner of the NBA’s Phoenix Suns and the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury, has been suspended one year and fined $10 million by the NBA as a result of an investigation into the Suns franchise.

The NBA announced the punishment Tuesday, saying the investigation found that during his time with the Suns and Mercury, Sarver used the N-word at least five times “when recounting the statements of others.”

There also were “instances of inequitable conduct toward female employees,” the NBA said in its statement, including “sex-related comments” and inappropriate comments on employees’ appearances.

The NBA commissioned an investigation after ESPN published a story in November 2021 detailing allegations of racism and misogyny during Sarver’s 17 years as owner.
