Sports for Thursday
From Wayne Mausser
Eric Lauer exited in the third inning with left elbow tightness, and the Milwaukee Brewers hurt their fading playoff hopes with an 8-4 loss to the last place Colorado Rockies on Wednesday. Lauer said he had some tightness in his elbow before the game, but then started experiencing numbness. Counsell said Lauer would be examined Thursday.Lauer, who allowed seven runs and six hits in 2 2/3 innings, will miss at least one start, manager Craig Counsell said.
Recent call-ups Michael Toglia and Alan Trejo homered for the Rockies, who rallied from a 6-1 deficit to beat Milwaukee a night earlier. Kyle Freeland threw six innings of one-run ball.
The Brewers, who got ninth-inning solo homers from Andrew McCutchen and Luis Urías, fell 3 1/2 games behind Philadelphia and San Diego for the final NL wild card. They finished a 2-5 trip with concerns surrounding Lauer as they scramble to make the postseason for a fifth straight year.
Colorado got four runs in the second, capped by Trejo’s two-run drive. Following Trejo’s second homer, a trainer accompanied Counsell to the mound, but Lauer (10-7) stayed in. Toglia, a 2019 first-round pick from UCLA who made his big league debut on Aug. 30, drilled a slider an estimated 421 feet to left for a three-run homer and a 7-0 lead in the third.
Milwaukee got one back when Keston Hiura tripled off the wall in right and scored on Victor Caratini’s groundout in the fifth. Christian Yelich added an RBI double in the eighth off Justin Lawrence, but the Brewers fell nine games behind NL Central-leading St. Louis. Milwaukee led the division on Aug. 5th.
Freeland (8-9) allowed two hits and struck out eight on a hot, dry day that saw the temperature climb into the upper 90s. Freeland threw seven scoreless innings in a win in Milwaukee on July 25th.
Brewers third baseman Jace Peterson threw a perfect eighth inning.
Brewers: RHP Freddy Peralta (4-3, 3.56 ERA), given three days of extra rest as he deals with fatigue following his return from a shoulder injury, will start the second game of Thursday’s home doubleheader against San Francisco. RHP Corbin Burnes (9-6, 3.02 ERA) works the opener for Milwaukee. The first game begins at 3:10 with the second game to follow and can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.
Elsewhere in the NL Central the Cardinals continue to win, edging the Nationals 6-5, scoring five runs in the 9th for the walk-off win. The Reds beat the Cubs 7-1 and the Pirates lost a doubleheader to the Mets 5-1 and 10-0. St. Louis leads Milwaukee by 9 ½ games in the division. The Brewers trail the Phillies and Padres by 3 ½ games for the final NL wild card.
In the Midwest League Wednesday afternoon the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers beat Beloit 4-3 at Fox Cities Stadium. The T-Rats host Beloit again tonight with the first pitch at 6:40.
The Packers returned to the practice field Wednesday to get ready for Sunday’s season opener in Minnesota against the Vikings. Besides preparations for the game, there’s been some controversy involving former Green Bay lineback Za’ Darius Smith. Smith, who missed most of last season because of a back injury while with the Packers, told Go Long’s Tyler Dunne that after last year’s in-season back surgery he felt he was treated poorly by the team. Smith felt like he was treated like a nobody when he was around Green Bay’s facility following that operation and those feelings led to him signing with Minnesota.
“I was treated bad,” Smith told Dunne. “That’s why I’m here now. So, I can play them twice a year.”
Smith played in Week 1 last year, but then had back surgery, and did not play again until the playoffs.
The Packers responded to Smith’s claim.
“I respect the crap out of Z as a player,” said head coach Matt LaFleur. “He busted his butt and did a lot of great things. I think we may have a different perspective of how things transpired. I will just leave it at that.”
“I was made aware of that,” Aaron Rodgers said. “I don’t want to add any fuel to the fire. I will just echo exactly what Matt said.”
“I felt like we interacted pretty well,” said defensive lineman Kenny Clark. “His feelings are his feelings. I can’t speak on how he feels. But I know I treated him well.”
Meanwhile on Wednesday quarterback Aaron Rodgers spoke to the media after practice, saying he’s hoping for a better performance than last year’s week one. The Packers lost in New Orleans to the Saints, 38-3.
Sunday’s game marks the second time in the past three years Green Bay has opened on the road against the Vikings and the 4th in the last five against an NFC North rival. This will be the 15th week one start for Rodgers. His passer rating is 100 in week one compared to 104 for his career.
The Packers released their first injury report on Wednesday. Wide receiver Allen Lazard was the only member of the team that did not practice. Head coach Matt LaFleur says he is dealing with an ankle injury after being stepped on last week.
