Sewer Cleaning And Televising

Ripon’s Public Works Committee is making a recommendation to the Common Council on a proposal to clean and televise 56,000 feet of the city’s sewer system. The city received proposals from three firms for the work. Using a closed circuit camera fed through the system, city officials will be able to see if there is blockage, root intrusion, leaks and cracks in sewer lines. The city has approximately 40.8 miles of sewer system. The work that will be done is for about 26 percent of that. Number Of Sheriff’s Traffic Pursuits Have Doubled Since 2019

Fond du Lac County Sheriff Ryan Waldschmidt says they have seen an alarming number of traffic chases this year. He points out that the number of pursuits involving high speeds, lights and sirens is at 27 compared to 25 for all of last year. In 2020 there were 20 traffic chases and 13 in 2019. Waldschmidt says when he started more than 24 years ago they had 3 to 5 such pursuits a year, but for some reason more people believe they can get away with it now. He says a recent chase involving a driver that drove the wrong way down Highway 151 to elude deputies could have been deadly. The suspect was high on drugs and had a violent criminal history. Waldschmidt says most of the people who flee from traffic stops have some type of history or reason for not wanting to get caught. He says if a chase is going to be too dangerous to the public and they feel they can take the suspect into custody later they will cut it off.

New COVID Vaccines On The Way

New vaccines are on the way in the coming weeks that should provide more protection against the BA4 and BA5 variants of COVID-19. Former Ripon Community COVID-19 Task Force member Jeff Puhlmann-Becker says even people to whom it represents a lower health risk should consider receiving it before fall and winter weather forces us to spend more time indoors with each other. He says for others especially those in higher risk categories at a minimum it should provide more protection against the virus and hospitalization for the more serious symptoms associated with the coronavirus.

Overdose Deaths

Congressman Glenn Grothman says drugs coming across our southern borders with illegal immigrants are taking lives here in Wisconsin. He says the number of drug overdose deaths in the past three years has almost doubled in the state and increased nationwide as well. The number of overdose deaths in the United States in the past year was 108,000. He says many of those deaths can be traced to drugs laced with fentanyl, much of which is coming up to Wisconsin due to our southern border crisis. The federal lawmaker from Glenbeulah has been pushing for lowering the threshold for fentanyl that triggers a 10-year mandatory minimum sentence for administering a fatal dose of it.
