Oneil Cruz went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and scored the go-ahead run as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 4-2 on Tuesday night. Cruz hit an RBI single in the third inning and a run-scoring double in the eighth. He also broke a 2-all tie in the eighth when he scored from third as Rodolfo Castro drew a bases-loaded walk from Brad Boxberger (3-3). Milwaukee remains six games behind St. Louis in the Central.
The Brewers opened the ninth inning with Kolten Wong’s double and Keston Hiura’s single to put runners at the corners, but Chase De Jong retired Andrew McCutchen on a pop fly and induced a double-play grounder from Luis Urías to earn his first career save.
The Pirates have won eight of their last 12 meetings with the Brewers after losing each of their first six matchups this season.
Wong and Pittsburgh’s Michael Chavis each hit a two-run homer Tuesday.
The Pirates’ patience paid off against Boxberger as they snapped a 2-all tie in the eighth. Boxberger walked Castro on four pitches and issued three free passes in the inning. Cruz walked with one out and advanced to second on a Bryan Reynolds’ single. Boxberger retired Ke’Bryan Hayes on a fly to left field before issuing consecutive walks to Ben Gamel and Castro.
The Brewers’ only runs came in the fourth, as Wong sent a 2-2 curveball from Mitch Keller just over the right-field wall for his 11th homer of the season and third in the last four games.
Pittsburgh tied the game in the seventh on Chavis’ two-out solo shot to left. Chavis connected on a 1-1 curve from Matt Bush and sent it an estimated 417 feet.
Wong’s homer was one of the only mistakes Keller made. Keller had a career-high 10 strikeouts and gave up two runs, four hits and two walks in six innings. Manny Bañuelos (1-1) earned the win with 1 1/3 innings of shutout relief.
Brewers’ starter Jason Alexander also set a career high in strikeouts with six. The 29-year-old rookie worked five innings and allowed one run, three hits and one walk.
The Pirates and Brewers meet for the final time this season Wednesday afternoon. Freddy Peralta (4-3, 3.69 ERA) will pitch for the Brewers against Pirates right-hander Zach Thompson (3-10, 5.33 ERA). First pitch is at 1:10 and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.
Elsewhere in the NL Central the Reds beat the Cardinals 6-1 and the Blue Jays downed the Cubs 5-3. The Brewers trail the Cardinals by six games in the division and the Padres by 2½ games for the final Wild Card spot.
In the Midwest League Tuesday might the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers won at Peoria 4-1. The teams meet again tonight with the first pitch at 6:35.
The Packers made their finals cuts Tuesday getting down to 53 players on the roster ahead of the September 11th season-opener at Minnesota. ..
There were no huge surprises on cut-down day. The biggest news is that Kicker Mason Crosby is being activated from the P.U.P. list and added to the active roster as Green Bay waived kicker Ramiz Ahmed.
There were a few notable cuts as WR Juwann Winfree did not make the team. The Packers are keeping 7 receivers, (including rookie Samori Toure, who had an impressive outing in the last preseason game.
Also, RB Tyler Goodson, DL Jack Heflin, and S Shawn Davis all had good showings in the preseason but did not make the cut.
The Packers are keeping all 11 of their draft picks.
Perhaps the biggest underdog story of this year’s cut-down is that of Micah Abernathy, who made the roster.. The safety was brought in just 2 weeks ago and impressed the coaches with an amazing interception against the Saints.
The team also has waived/injured TE Nate Becker, DL Akiel Byers, S Shawn Davis, S Innis Gaines, WR Ishmael Hyman and TE Alizé Mack. The transactions were announced Tuesday by General Manager Brian Gutekunst.
The Milwaukee Brewers welcomed their 100 millionth fan in the team’s history when they host the Pittsburgh Pirates at American Family Field Tuesday night.
The team plans to celebrate with $6 tickets for 11 of their remaining home games. Tickets go on sale at 10 A.M. Wednesday at brewers.com/10million. You can get seats for the terrace level or loge level bleachers. Fans will receive a $6 concessions voucher for food and beverages, good for the date on the ticket.
According to Adam McCalvy on the Brewers website, the team’s tally of paid fans goes back to the franchise’s first season as the Seattle Pilots playing at Sick’s Stadium in 1969. The expansion team had a disappointing turnout of 677,944 fans in its inaugural — and turns out, only — season in Seattle.
The fan count continued when the team moved to Milwaukee in 1970 and played as the Brewers in County Stadium, which had twice the seating capacity of Sick’s Stadium and expanded to 53,000 seats in the 1980s, according to Wikipedia.
The Brewers moved into Miller Park, now American Family Field, and has attracted between 1.7 million and almost 3.1 million fans each year since it opened in 2001, with the exception of 2020 when no fans were allowed in the stands due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
