Sports for Tuesday

From Wayne Mausser.

Brewers rookie Garrett Mitchell is starting to impress. After sparking an early rally with a walk and his first career stolen base, Mitchell reawakened American Family Field in the eighth inning with a tying, two-out, two-run home run before Keston Hiura hammered a two-run walk-off homer in the ninth for a7-5 Brewers win over the Pirates on Monday night.

After a brief taste of Triple-A, he earned a callup on Saturday and started for the first time on Sunday, when he delivered a go-ahead single in a series-clinching win over the Cubs. With another righty on the mound for Monday’s series opener against the Pirates, Mitchell started once again and made the most of it.

Mitchell finished 1-for-2 with two runs scored, two RBIs and his first career stolen base, which came on a pickoff attempt and helped spark a three-run Brewers rally in the third inning.

After ace Corbin Burnes let that lead slip away, falling into a 5-3 deficit on a three-run homer from Oneil Cruz — six of his 11 home runs this season are at Milwaukee’s expense — and a solo shot from Rodolfo Castro, Mitchell powered the Brewers back into a tie when he greeted Pirates reliever Wil Crowe with a two-run home run on a 1-0 changeup with two outs in the eighth.

The Brewers still needed scoreless relief from Devin Williams (5-3), who followed two scoreless innings from Brent Suter and at least one run in the ninth to win. Hiura, after initially showing bunt with a runner aboard, gave them two runs with his third career walk-off home run.  Milwaukee has its first three-game winning streak in August.

The teams meet again tonight as Pirates right-hander Mitch Keller (4.10, 4.50 ERA) goes against Brewers righty Jason Alexander (2-1, 5.26 ERA).  First pitch is at 7:10 and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.

Elsewhere in the NL Central Monday the Cardinals continued to roll with a 13-4 win at Cincinnati as Albert Pujols  hit career home run 494. The blast came off left-hander Ross Detwiler, marking the 450th pitcher Pujols has hit a homer against in his career, breaking a tie with Barry Bonds. It also marked his 21st long ball at Great American Ball Park and puts him two away from tying Alex Rodriguez for the fourth-most homers all-time. Elsewhere, the Blue Jays edged the Cubs 5-4.  The Brewerss remain six games behind the Cardinals in the division and 1 ½ games behind the Padres for a Wild Card spot.  The Padres edged the Giants 6-5.

Elsewhere in the Major League, the Yankees Aaron Judge hit his 50th home run of the year as the Yankees lost to the Angels 4-3.  He’s just one of just 7 players to hit 50 HRs before September in AL/NL history.

The Midwest League had the day off Monday. Tonight the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers are at Peoria with the first pitch at 6:35.

Final cuts come today around the NFL as teams must trim their rosters down to 53 players by 3:00 CDT.

Rookie wide receiver Samori Toure has made his case to make that final roster in camp. The seventh round pick saving his best performance for the last preseason game with 83 yards on six catches. Add that to the work Toure put in while on the practice field, and the former Nebraska wide out has to feel good about the case he made.

“I’m at peace with the amount of work that I put in, what I’ve been able to do. But it’s just a waiting game. Happy to be in this opportunity. A lot of people don’t even get a chance to compete in camp. I’m blessed, I’m excited, and just going to see what happens,” said Samori Toure.

Undrafted rookies are among the players also fighting for spots on the roster, including running back Tyler Goodson, who spent training camp trying to grab the third running back spot.

“What’s great about our relationship and where we’ve come is just to have the debate, and never feel like it gets contentious or anything like that. Sometimes you can agree to disagree and you work through everything. i do believe, and I trust, that [Gutekunst] and his staff they do a hell of a job. They see the majority the same way we see them as a coaching staff,” said Matt LaFleur.

There will no doubt be more moves to come after the initial 53 man roster is finalized, starting with the 16 player practice squad. Also decisions about injured players, like when to take kicker Mason Crosby off the PUP list or the pending return to game action of both Elgton Jenkins and David Bakhtiari.  Coach Matt LaFleur has said he does not know whether Jenkins or Bakhtiari would be ready for the Packers’ Week 1 game Sept. 11 at Minnesota.

Meanwhile, Packers offensive tackle Elgton Jenkins was back on the practice field Monday after missing Sunday’s practice.

Jenkins is working his way back from a torn ACL last Nov. 21 at Minnesota that ended his season.

Serena Williams ‘ expected retirement will have to wait. The 23-time major champion won her first-round match 6-3, 6-3 over Danka Kovinic at the US Open on Monday night.

On Monday night, the sold-out crowd here of nearly 24,000 — which included a laundry list of A-list celebrities and notables was on its feet before Williams even took the court. After a video narrated by Queen Latifah was shown summarizing her legendary career, Williams was introduced to the crowd as the “Greatest Of All Time” to loud cheers that continued during any break in the action throughout the match.

It was Williams’ 102nd win at Arthur Ashe Stadium — the most by any player since it opened in 1997 — and extended her record for Grand Slam victories by a woman to 366. After the match, Williams was celebrated with an on-court ceremony that featured Gayle King and Billie Jean King, as well as a “Thank you, Serena” video from Oprah Winfrey.
