Sports for Monday

From Wayne Mausser

Christian Yelich and Kolten Wong each homered for the second straight game and Garrett Mitchell drove in two runs with his first hit as a major leaguer, leading the Milwaukee Brewers over the Chicago Cubs 9-7 Sunday.

Mitchell, Milwaukee’s first-round choice in the 2020 MLB draft, made his debut Saturday as a defensive replacement after getting called up from Triple-A Nashville, where was hitting .343 with nine RBIs in 20 games.  The 23-year-old outfielder flied out his first time up in the third. Mitchell then hit two-run single the next inning off Sean Newcomb (2-1) that put Milwaukee ahead for good at 3-2.

Yelich followed by sending an 0-1 fastball over the wall in left for his 11th home run of the season and Wong added another two-run drive in the fifth for a 7-4 lead.

Eric Lauer (10-5) gave up four runs in five innings including Nico Hoerner hit a two-run homer in the fifth.

Franmil Reyes hit a two-run homer in the ninth off Brad Boxberger and Hoerner followed with a single. Devin Williams relieved and got three outs for his ninth save.

Reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Corbin Burnes (9-6, 2.84 ERA) gets the start Monday as the Brewers take on the Pirates in the first of a three-game series in Milwaukee. First pitch is at 7:10 and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.

Elsewhere in the NL Central Sunday the Nationals nipped the Reds 3-2, the Pirates shutout the Phillies 5-0 and last night the Cardinals beat the Braves 6-3.  St. Louis remains six games ahead of the Brewers in the division.  Milwaukee is 1 ½ games behind San Diego for the remaining Wild Card spot.

In the Midwest League Sunday the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers beat Lansing 5-2 at Fox Cities Stadium. There are no games scheduled today.

The Packers have until Tuesday to make their final roster cuts down to 53 players, but team made one move on Sunday by releasing linebacker Ty Summers.

Summers was selected by the Packers in the seventh round of the 2019 draft, and appeared in 50 games over the last three seasons. Summers was a contributor mainly on special teams for Green Bay, leading the team with 12 tackles in 2020 but just five last season.

The Packers also saw a pair of safeties return to practice on Sunday. That includes Darnell Savage Jr., who was sidelined after a hamstring injury 23 days ago.

Also returning to practice was special teams ace Dallin Leavitt after he suffered a shoulder injury against the 49ers in the first preseason game.

Tackle Elgton Jenkins did not participate in practice on Sunday. Head coach Matt LaFleur said before practice that it was not related to the torn ACL that ended Jenkins’ season last November.

The NFL’s preseason came to a close Sunday as the Steelers won at home over the Lions 19-9.

The regular season begins on Thursday September 8th when the Buffalo Bills play the Rams in Los Angeles.  The Packers open the season Sunday September 11th at Minnesota against the Vikings.

Rory McIlroy is the FedEx Cup champion for a third time thanks to his victory in the Tour Championship on Sunday at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta.

McIlroy carded a four-under in a drama-filled final round to finish at 21 under. He was one shot better than Sungjae Im and Scottie Scheffler.

Having to play from behind for nearly the entire day, McIlroy took sole possession of first from Scheffler with a par on No. 16.

Scheffler was six shots up on McIlroy and Xander Schauffele before the fourth round began. Following the resumption of the third round Sunday morning, he birdied four of his final six holes in the third round.

With a huge assist from Richard Childress Racing teammate Tyler Reddick after a rain delay of more than three hours, Austin Dillon forced his way into the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs and broke Martin Truex Jr.’s heart.

Dillon’s victory in Sunday’s rain-delayed Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona International Speedway — his first of the season and his second at the track — needed the convergence of several different circumstances to fall into place.

After avoiding serious damage in a wreck off Turn 4 on Lap 125, Dillon survived a subsequent 13-car melee in Turn 1 and took the lead before rain halted the race. After a red-flag period of 3 hours, 19 minutes, 57 seconds, Dillon fell behind 2022 Daytona 500 winner Austin Cindric and trailed him from the restart on Lap 145 of 160 until he made the race-winning move on Lap 158.  Dillon’s victory knocked Truex out of the playoffs and handed the final berth to Ryan Blaney, who finished three points ahead of Truex in the final regular-season standings.

Tyler Reddick finished second, followed by Austin Cindric, Landon Cassill and Noah Gragson to round out the top five.
