Sports for Wednesday

From Wayne Mausser

After being shutout for the first time all season at home the Dodgers’ bats erupted in a 10-1 win over the Brewers Tuesday night.

The Brewers opened the series with a 4-0 victory Monday night but could not get the offense going against Dodgers ace Tony Gonsolin (16-1, 2.10 ERA) as he coasted through five innings to pick up the win. He gave up one run on three hits while striking out three and walking two.

Brewers starter Corbin Burnes (9-6, 2.84) gave up seven runs, all earned, in 3 2/3 innings while striking out three and walking two. The big blow was a three-run homer by Trace Thompson, his sixth, in the second inning as the Dodgers jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Los Angeles picked up three more in the fourth to knock Burnes out of the game.

Milwaukee picked up its only run in the fifth inning while the Dodgers added three more in the 8th for the final margin of victory.

The Brewers managed just four hits, two by Christian Yelich.

The two teams play again tonight as right-hander Adrian Houser (4-8, 4.72 ERA) starts for Milwaukee against left-hander Andrew Heaney (1-1, 1.77 ERA).  First pitch is at 8:00 CDT and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.

In other games in the NL Central Tuesday the Cardinals split a doubleheader with the Cubs, losing the first game 2-0 but then coming back to pound Chicago 13-3 at Wrigley Field,  the Phillies nipped the Reds 7-6 and the Braves beat the Pirates 6-1.  St. Louis leads Milwaukee by 5 ½ games in the division.

In the Midwest League Tuesday night, Lansing nipped the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 4-3 at Fox Cities Stadium. They play again this afternoon with the first pitch at 12:10.

MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers and most of Green Bay’s other starters will open the season without having played in any of the Packers’ three exhibition games.

Packers coach Matt LaFleur said Tuesday that Rodgers and the other Packers who hadn’t played in the first two exhibition games also will be held out of Green Bay’s preseason finale Thursday at Kansas City.

The Packers want to make sure they kept their key players healthy for the Sept. 11 regular-season opener at Minnesota. Most of the regulars got plenty of reps last week when the Packers held two days of joint practices with the New Orleans Saints.   Green Bay coaches remember all too well what happened to wide receiver Jordy Nelson, who tore his ACL in the 2015 preseason.

“Just the risk vs. reward, knowing it’s a long season, having 17 games,” LaFleur said. “I think early in we get stressed with travel in the season, as well. … You factor in everything.”

The Packers are away from Lambeau Field for six of their first nine games. including an Oct. 9 date with the New York Giants in London that technically counts as a home game.

According to the Packers’ unofficial depth chart, the only first-teamers on offense and defense to play in the first two preseason games are rookie linebacker Quay Walker and offensive linemen Yosh Nijman, Jon Runyan Jr., Josh Myers, Jake Hanson and Royce Newman.

Green Bay’s starting offensive line for the season opener is in flux because its two best linemen — David Bakhtiari and Elgton Jenkins — are recovering from knee injuries. Both have been activated from the physically unable to perform list but their availability for the season opener remains uncertain.

This marks the second straight year that the Packers haven’t used most of their starters for any of their preseason games. The strategy might have produced short-term consequences last year when the Packers opened the regular season with a 38-3 loss to the Saints though they went on to finish 13-4 and won a third straight NFC North title.

Meanwhile, Mason Crosby turns 38 next month and is in the final year of his contract.  He is entering his 16th NFL season, all with the Packers.  He had a sore knee after last season and by the end of OTA’s, the decision was made for surgery.  He won’t kick in Thursday’s preseason game against Kansas City, but everyone expects he’ll be ready to go for the opener at Minnesota.  Crosby said he feels he’ll be ready for the season opener at Minnesota.

Safety Adrian Amos will not play at Kansas City.  He said making the vets play in preseason last year would not have prevented 38-3 loss to the Saints in week 1 at Jacksonville

In other team news Tuesday, the Packers placed RB Kylin Hill on the reserve/physically unable to perform list and released WR Danny Davis and S Vernon Scott. Hill suffered a season-ending knee injury last October and is still working his way back. Scott, a 2020 seventh-round draft pick, played 18 regular-season games and one playoff game over the past two years. Davis is a rookie undrafted free agent from Wisconsin.

The Packers have also reportedly made a trade involving a local product. ESPN reports the Packers are trading offensive lineman Cole Van Lanen to the Jacksonville Jaguars for an undisclosed draft pick.

Van Lanen is a graduate of Bay Port High School and a former Wisconsin Badgers player.

Van Lanen, a sixth-round draft pick of the Packers in 2021, spent most of last season on the practice squad. He played in one game last year.
