Sports for August 22nd
From Wayne Mausser
Keston Hiura homered twice and drove in three runs, and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Chicago Cubs 5-2 on Sunday to salvage the finale of their weekend series. Rowdy Tellez also connected and Willy Adames hit a tiebreaking sacrifice fly for Milwaukee, which had dropped three of four. The Brewers blew three one-run leads during a 6-5 loss to the Cubs in 11 innings on Saturday. Milwaukee trails NL Central-leading St. Louis by five games .
Brent Suter (5-3) got four outs for the win on manager Craig Counsell’s 52nd birthday, and Taylor Rogers worked the ninth for his first save since he was acquired in the Aug. 1 trade that sent Josh Hader to San Diego. Chicago wasted a stellar performance by Justin Steele, who struck out nine in six scoreless innings. Ian Happ and Seiya Suzuki homered, but the Cubs finished with just five hits. The Cubs had won five in a row and nine of 12 overall.
Adames put Milwaukee ahead to stay when he drove in Kolten Wong with a fly ball to center in the eighth. Wong reached on a leadoff pinch-hit single and advanced to third on two wild pitches by Rowan Wick (3-6). Hiura made it 5-2 when he hit a two-run shot off Kervin Castro in the ninth. It was Hiura’s second career multihomer game.
Cubs starter Justin Steele allowed two hits — both singles — and walked one in six scorless innings. The left-hander is winless in his last five starts, but he has a sparkling 0.79 ERA and 33 strikeouts over his last 22 2/3 innings.
While Steele cruised along for Chicago, Brandon Woodruff kept Milwaukee in the game with 5 2/3 innings of two-run ball. The big right-hander is unbeaten in his last 10 outings. Woodruff got off to a taxing start when he needed 13 pitches to retire leadoff man Nick Madrigal on a fly ball to right. After Nico Hoerner grounded out, Happ hit a drive to right for his 13th homer this season and No. 100 for his career.
Suzuki added his 10th homer in the fourth, reaching the basket in center, but Milwaukee jumped on Chicago’s bullpen in the seventh.
On Mark Leiter Jr.’s first pitch after Andrew McCutchen was caught stealing, Tellez hit a drive to right-center for his 26th homer. Manager David Ross then brought in rookie left-hander Brandon Hughes, and Hiura went deep for his 11th homer on the year. It was Milwaukee’s fifth set of back-to-back homers this season.
Brewers LHP Eric Lauer (8-5, 3.58 ERA) starts Monday night in the opener of a three-game series at the Los Angeles Dodgers. LHP Julio Urías (13-6, 2.40 ERA) takes the mound for the NL West leaders. First pitch is at 9:10 CDT and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.
Elsewhere in the NL Central Sunday the Reds beat the Pirates 9-5 and the Cardinals downed the Diamondbacks 6-4. The Brewers trail the Cardinals by five games in the division.
In the Midwest League Sunday the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers lost at Cedar Rapids to the Kernels, 7-3. The league is off today.
The Packers were back on the practice field Sunday following Friday night’s win at home over the Saints 20-10, in their only preseason game at Lambeau Field.
Meanwhile, offensive tackle David Bakhtiari has moved a step closer to returning from the knee injury that caused him to play only one game last season. Bakhtiari participated in individual drills at Sunday’s practice after getting removed from the physically unable to perform list.
“We’re going to take it a day at a time,” LaFleur said. “There’s no thought as far as Week One is concerned right now. We just want to see how he responds. And when he’s ready, he’s ready.”
Bakhtiari tore his left anterior cruciate ligament on Dec. 31, 2020, missing the rest of that season and most of the following season. He returned to play in the Packers 2021 regular-season finale at Detroit but had a setback and wasn’t available for their NFL divisional playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers.
Bakhtiari’s absence has left the Packers without one of the game’s premier linemen. Not only was Bakhtiari a first-team All-Pro in 2018 as well as 2020, he also was a second-team selection in the All-Pro balloting in 2016, 2017 and 2019.
Sunday’s news suggests the Packers are closer to having their top two linemen back on the field. Elgton Jenkins was activated from the PUP lst on August 14th
Jenkins, a 2020 Pro Bowl left guard, filled in for Bakhtiari at left tackle last season before tearing his left ACL on Nov. 21 at Minnesota. The Packers haven’t yet indicated whether Jenkins will be available to play the Sept. 11 season opener, also at Minnesota.
LaFleur also said he hadn’t decided yet whether to play more of his starters in the Packers’ preseason finale Thursday at Kansas City.
The Packers had 30 players inactive for their 20-10 victory Friday over New Orleans. and have rested virtually all their first-team performers for each of the first two preseason games — something it did for the entire preseason last year. The Packers opened the 2021 campaign with a 38-3 loss to New Orleans but ended up finishing 13-4 and winning a third straight NFC North title.
Packers quarterback Jordan Love and rookie fourth-round pick Romeo Doubs connected on a touchdown pass for the second straight week. Danny Etling scored for the Packers on a 51 yard keeper.
Saints QB Ian Book fumbled a snap that Green Bay’s Shawn Davis returned 37 yards to set up Ramiz Ahmed’s 45-yard field goal. The Saints’ next series ended when Micah Abernathy made a diving interception of Book’s pass.
With reigning MVP Aaron Rodgers sitting out each of Green Bay’s first two games, the Packers have gotten an extended look at Love.
The 2020 first-round pick from Utah State went 13 of 24 for 176 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions in a 28-21 loss the San Francisco 49ers last week, though one of the interceptions bounced off Tyler Davis’ hands and another came when a defensive back stripped the ball from Doubs. Love managed to avoid any turnovers Friday while playing into the fourth quarter. He put the Packers ahead for good in the second quarter with a 4-yard pass to Doubs, who made a leaping catch over New Orleans’ Brian Allen.
Etling took over for Love in the final period and scored on a 51-yard run around the right end with 8:20 remaining.
Green Bay’s Tyler Goodson, an undrafted free agent from Iowa, had 10 carries for 42 yards and a 10-yard catch. Packers WR Christian Watson participated in pregame warmups but was held out of the game. The second-round pick from North Dakota State underwent knee surgery after organized team activities and was activated from the physically unable to perform list Sunday.
Patrick Cantlay won the BMW Championship for the second straight time Sunday. Cantlay after his birdie-par finish for a 2-under 69, giving him a 1-shot victory over Scott Stallings at Wilmington Country Club.
Cantlay, who finished at 14-under 270, became the first player to win the BMW Championship in consecutive years since the FedEx Cup began in 2007. No one has ever repeated in any of the playoff events. The victory, his second of the year, moved him to No. 3 in the world.
Stallings has gone 238 starts since his last victory eight years ago at Torrey Pines, and he played like that drought might end. But he missed four birdie chances inside 18 feet at the end, the last one from just inside 10 feet. The consolation prize is his first trip to the Tour Championship.
The 30 golfers who moved into the top 30 Sunday are eligible for the Tour Championship.
For the second consecutive day, Kyle Larson took his first lead of the race with five laps remaining and held off road-course ace and fellow Californian AJ Allmendinger for a trophy. Larson completed the rare weekend sweep at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International on Sunday afternoon with a clutch win in the NASCAR Cup Series‘ Go Bowling at the Glen.
Larson made a dramatic pass on his Hendrick Motorsports teammate Chase Elliott on a restart with five laps to go on the historic road course. As the race leader, Elliott got to choose where to line up alongside Larson for the green flag and chose to start on Larson‘s outside, setting up the dramatic contest for position.
It was the second consecutive NASCAR Cup Series victory for Larson, 30, at Watkins Glen as he finished .882 seconds ahead of Kaulig Racing‘s Allmendinger. It‘s Larson‘s 18th career win and second of the 2022 season for the defending NASCAR Cup Series champion.
A.J. Allmendinger finished second, followed by Joe Logano, Chase Elliott and Daniel Suarez, to round out the top five.
