Sports for August 19th
From Wayne Mausser
Andrew McCutchen homered twice Thursday and Hunter Renfroe also went deep off left-hander Andrew Heaney in Milwaukee’s 5-3 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers at American Family Field, splitting the four-game series. McCutchen had three RBIs for his 19th career multi-homer game and first since June 1, 2021, when he also hit a pair for the Philadelphia Phillies in a 17-3 blowout of the Cincinnati Reds. His homers on Thursday were a solo shot in the first inning and a two-run blast in the third. Renfroe, who went 3 for 3, added a two-run homer in the fifth to help the Brewers build a 5-0 lead.
McCutchen entered Thursday batting .302 for his career with a .396 on-base percentage and .940 OPS against left-handers. This season’s been a little different: .241 against left-handers and .257 against right-handers.
Heaney (1-1) struck out 10 but allowed five runs, five hits and one walk in 4 2/3 innings.
Milwaukee’s Corbin Burnes (9-5) held the Dodgers scoreless for five innings before running into trouble in the sixth. The reigning NL Cy Young Award winner ended up striking out six and allowing three runs, six hits and two walks in 5 2/3 innings. Devin Williams struck out the side in the ninth for his eighth save in as many opportunities.
The Dodgers got back in the game by scoring three runs in the sixth inning. Brewers center fielder Tyrone Taylor, who reached over the fence to catch a drive from Tampa Bay’s David Peralta on Aug. 9, nearly robbed an opposing player again on a two-out shot from Gavin Lux. The ball was initially in Taylor’s glove but fell out and bounced back into play after he reached his arm over the center-field wall.
Lux’s two-run triple cut Milwaukee’s lead to 5-3 and took Burnes out of the game. Brad Boxberger replaced Burnes and walked Joey Gallo to put runners on the corners before striking out Chris Taylor to end the threat.
The Brewers head to Chicago to begin a three-game series with the Cubs this afternoon. Scheduled starters Friday are LHP Aaron Ashby (2-10, 4.24) for the Brewers and RHP Keegan Thompson (9-5, 3.67) for the Cubs. First pitch is at 1:20 and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.
In other games in the Central Division Thursday the Cardinals bombed the Rockies 13-0, the Cubs nipped the Orioles 3-2 and Pittsburgh downed Boston 8-2. The Reds had the day off. The Brewers remain three games behind the Cardinals in the division.
In the Midwest Thursday night the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers lost at Cedar Rapids, with the Kernels winning 1-0. They play again tonight with the first pitch at 6:35.
The Packers host the New Orleans Saints tonight at Lambeau Field in their only home preseason game. Green Bay opened with a loss at San Francisco last Friday night 28-21 while the Saints lost at Houston 17-13 last Thursday. It’s the teams’ 10th meeting in the preseason but the Saints’ first preseason game at Lambeau Field in seven years.
The teams’ held joint practices on Tuesday and Wednesday. While the Packers defense has looked good so far, the offense has struggled, especially the young receivers. This week Aaron Rodgers challenged them, saying they need pick their game and coach Matt LaFleur said he’s looking for more consistency with the young unit.
Third-year quarterback Jordan Love will once again start. Last week, he was good at times’ throwing two touchdowns but also was picked off three times.
This is the Packers’ 2nd annual Packers Give Back Game. This year benefits Special Olympics Wisconsin. Hundreds of Special Olympics Wisconsin athletes are being bused to the game and will watch from a designated area in the north end zone.
Some athletes will take the field before kickoff with a Special Olympics torch. Fans in the stands are encouraged to join in the Special Olympics’ Athlete Oath: “Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.”
Kickoff is at 7:00 with the pregame starting at 5:00 on FM 102.3, The Bug.
In other team news, the Packers claimed wide receiver Travis Fulgham off waivers from the Denver Broncos on Thursday. Fulgham had 38 catches for 539 yards and four touchdowns for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2020 but was released after training camp the following year.
He appeared in one game for Denver in 2021 and spent the rest of the season on the practice squads of the Broncos and Miami Dolphins. The 2019 sixth-round draft pick from Old Dominion appeared in three games for the Detroit Lions as a rookie and spent most of that season on their practice squad.
In Thursday night preseason football the Bears won at Seattle over the Seahawks, 27-11.
Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson has been suspended for 11 games during the 2022 NFL season and fined $5 million for violating the NFL’s personal-conduct policy per the terms of a settlement reached between the league and the NFL Players Association, the league announced on Thursday.
Additionally, Watson must commit to mandatory evaluation and treatment.
Per the NFL, Watson’s suspension will take effect following the final roster cutdown on Aug. 30 and he will be eligible for reinstatement on Nov. 28. Watson would first be eligible to play in Week 13 against the Houston Texans, his former team. NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero reported Watson will be eligible to return to the Browns’ facility on Oct. 10 and resume practicing on Nov. 14. Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski told reporters on Thursday that Watson will not play again in the preseason.
The league also announced Thursday that the NFL and the Browns each will contribute $1 million, which, when combined with Watson’s $5 million fine, will create a fund of $7 million to support the prevention of sexual misconduct and assault.
