Tony Gonsolin pitched seven scoreless innings for his 15th victory, Austin Barnes and Max Muncy homered, and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Milwaukee Brewers 2-1 on Wednesday night. Gonsolsin (15-1) matched the Astros’ Justin Verlander for the major league lead in wins. Los Angeles is 21-5 since the All-Star break and has the majors’ best record at 81-35.
Craig Kimbrel, who blew a save in the Brewers’ 5-4 win in 11 innings on Tuesday night, allowed two baserunners in the ninth but escaped for his 21st save.
Milwaukee fell three games behind first-place St. Louis in the NL Central.
Eric Lauer (8-5) pitched seven solid innings for the Brewers, allowing four hits in seven innings, including the two homers. He had been 6-0 with a 2.56 ERA in nine career starts against the Dodgers.
Gonsolin was dominant in his first career start against Milwaukee. He gave up two hits while walking one batter and tying his season high with eight strikeouts. The All-Star right-hander retired the first nine Brewers, throwing 28 of his 37 pitches for strikes in the first three innings. Gonsolin walked Willy Adames in the fourth and allowed one-out singles in the fifth and sixth.
Christian Yelich had an RBI single off reliever Caleb Ferguson in the eighth.
Barnes opened the scoring when he hit the first pitch of the sixth inning into the Brewers’ bullpen for his fifth home run. Barnes, reinstated from the family emergency list Tuesday, hadn’t played since Aug. 6 and hadn’t homered since May 21.
The four-game series ends Thursday with Dodgers LHP Andrew Heaney (1-0, 1.16 ERA) facing Brewers RHP Corbin Burnes (8-5, 2.39). Heaney left his last start Saturday after three innings with a left arm contusion after getting hit with a line drive. Burnes, the NL Cy Young Award winner, leads the league in strikeouts (181). First pitch is at 1:10 and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 3 FM, WISS.
Elsewhere in the NL Central Wednesday the Reds shutout the Phillies 1-0, the Cubs nipped the Nationals 3-2, the Red Sox downed Pittsburgh 8-3 and the Cardinals beat the Rockies 5-1. The Brewers trail the Cardinals by three games in the division.
In the Midwest League Wednesday night Cedar Rapids nipped the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 2-1. The two teams play again tonight in Cedar Rapids with the first pitch at 6:35.
The Packers and Saints mixed it up a little bit during day two of their joint practices Wednesday leading up to Friday night’s game between the two teams at Lambeau Field. On just the 4th snap of team drills, Packers corner Eric Stokes got tangled up with Saints receiver Jarvis Landry, leading to Landry’s ejection from practice. Saints coach, Dennis Allen, had made it clear that anyone who gets in a fight is going to get kicked out of practice.
The Packers’ defense was dominating as the day was capped in the 2-minute drill by a 4th-down sack by Kingsley Enagbare.
On the other side of the ball, the Packers offense took its lumps at times against the Saints defense, but provided some wow moments as well. None bigger than the 2-minute drill by the #2 Packers offense. Jordan Love hit Samori Toure for a touchdown on a deep bomb. They went for 2 and the win and Love connected with Toure again. Love also was hot in the red zone drills, completing 3 of 4 passes for touchdowns in that period.
Meanwhile after calling out his receivers to make more plays on Tuesday, quarterback Aaron Rodgers met with his young wide receiving corps before practice.
“Basically letting us know that the Green Bay receiving corps has always been held to a super high standard, all the legends that have been through here. It’s just about us carrying on that standard and stepping up. Just to get it really reiterated by him, it really put it in perspective,” said rookie wide receiver Samori Toure. “One of the greatest quarterbacks of all time, if not the greatest, you’ve got to take it to heart. He’s the team leader. So, he’s definitely a voice that we listen too.”
“I think his comments yesterday was really about us as a group, and the importance. When you look at me, Allen, we’ve played with Aaron for a while now. So, we both understand what he’s looking for, but it’s about passing that message down to the other guys,” said Randall Cobb.
One receiver Rodgers is building chemistry with during the joint practices has been veteran Sammy Watkins. The Packers free agent addition had the first touchdown in the red zone period on Wednesday, and had one of his best weeks in camp against the Saints.
In other team news, the Packers signed S De’Vante Cross and released WR Malik Taylor.
Cross (6-0, 216), a rookie from Virginia, originally signed with the Commanders on May 6, but was released. Taylor joined the Packers in 2019 and played in 25 regular-season games with one start and appeared in two postseason contests.
In NFL preseason action tonight the Bears play at Seattle against the Seahawks.
