Sports for August 17th
From Wayne Mausser
Christian Yelich snapped an 0-for-26 slump and the longest power drought of his five seasons with the Brewers but it took extra innings (and a little small ball) to down the Dodgers 5-4 Tuesday night.
Yelich smashed a 451-foot home run in the fifth inning and Victor Caratini blooped a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the 11th, giving the Brewers a walk-off win at American Family Field in Milwaukee’s fifth extra-inning contest in the past 11 games.
Willy Adames also went deep on Tuesday for the Brewers, who gained a game in the NL Wild Card race — they trail the Padres by one game for the final postseason berth — and remained two games behind the Cardinals in the NL Central.
Yelich’s homer was his first at home since May 5th, and his first home run anywhere since July 2 at Pittsburgh. A stretch of 142 homerless plate appearances followed, capped by 26 hitless at-bats over parts of eight games before Yelich connected in the fifth inning on Tuesday against Dodgers rookie right-hander Ryan Pepiot.
That gave the Brewers a 3-2 lead, but Chris Taylor’s home run off Matt Bush in the seventh knotted the game again at 3-3 and Taylor’s diving catch in center field denied Andrew McCutchen a walk-off hit with two outs in the 10th.
Brewers starter Brandon Woodruff gave up two runs on five hits in five innings. Brent Suter (4-3) picked up the win.
Dodgers starter Ryan Pepiot gave up three runs on three hits in 4 2/3 innings. Craig Kimbrel (3-5) took the loss with his fourth blown save of the season.
Game three of their four-game series is tonight as right-hander Tony Gonsolin (14-1, 2.24 ERA) starts for the Dodgers against Brewers left-hander Eric Lauer (8-4, 3.64 ERA). First pitch is at 7:10 and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM ,WISS.
Elsewhere in the NL Central Tuesday the Phillies pounded the Reds 11-4, the Cubs beat the Nationals 7-5, Boston downed Pittsburgh 5-3 and the Cardinals nipped the Rockies 5-4. Milwaukee stays two games behind St. Louis in the division.
In the Midwest League Tuesday night the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers lost at Cedar Rapids 7-2. They meet again tonight with the first pitch at 6:35.
The Packers held their first of two joint practices with the Saints Tuesday in preparation for Friday night’s game at Lambeau Field against New Orleans.
Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers wants more consistency from his young wide receivers as training camp kicks into higher gear.
Veterans Sammy Watkins and Allen Lazard had solid days Tuesday. Both made great grabs late in practice during 11-on-11 team periods. Rookie Romeo Doubs added to what’s been an impressive camp with a red zone touchdown, but also unable to haul in a deep throw from Rodgers later on. Doubs wasn’t the only one with a drop. And the Packers’ offense dropped the ball with a lot of offensive penalties as well.
“A lot of mental errors, a lot of pre-snap penalties,” Rodgers said. “Kind of been the theme of camp. Simple, simple plays we are messing up. It’s good to do it against another team. I like the energy from the first unit, but phew, a lot of mental mistakes. It’s unfortunately some of the same guys. Repeat mistakes are a problem. So we have to clean those things up a little bit; especially young receivers, we have to be way more consistent. A lot of drops, a lot of bad route decisions, running the wrong route. So we have to get better in that area.”
On the other side of the ball, Green Bay’s defense continues to shine. Green Bay’s defensive front had success getting into the backfield and collapsing the pocket against the Saints on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, NFL teams had to cut their rosters down to 85 players by 3:00 p.m. central on Tuesday. The Packers released RB BJ Baylor, LB Ellis Brooks, TE Dominique Dafney, G George Moore and LB Randy Ramsey.
Dafney may be the biggest surprise at this point in camp after appearing in 15 games with the Packers since signing with the team in 2020. His first touchdown ironically coming against the Saints that season, as well.
The Packers also officially announced they claimed tight end Nate Beckers off waivers from the Carolina Panthers.
World Para Ice Hockey says it’s bringing the first-ever Para Ice Hockey Women’s World Challenge to Green Bay this month.

The organization says this event is the first step to an eventual Women’s World Championship. It hopes to expand female participation in Para Ice Hockey worldwide, ultimately having women’s Para Ice Hockey recognized in the Paralympics someday.
