Freddie Freeman and Gavin Lux homered to back Julio Urías’ five solid innings, and the Los Angeles Dodgers blanked the Milwaukee Brewers 4-0 on Monday night. A day after their 12-game winning streak ended with a 4-0 loss at Kansas City, the major league-best Dodgers got back on track, improving to 20-4 since the All-Star break. Freeman hit a solo shot in the first inning off Freddy Peralta (4-3) and Lux added a two-run blast against Hoby Milner in the sixth.
Urías (13-6) worked out of trouble in the first three innings. He finished with six strikeouts while allowing four hits and two walks, improving to 10-0 with a 1.99 ERA over his last 11 starts. Urías has a career 1.87 ERA after the All-Star break, the lowest in major league history by anyone who has pitched at least 180 innings after the Midsummer Classic. He came through again for the Dodgers on a day when they announced two-time All-Star right-hander Walker Buehler will have season-ending elbow surgery.
The Brewers got the leadoff man on base in each of the first three innings against Urías. But they went 0 for 9 with runners in scoring position and were hitless after Rowdy Tellez’s one-out single in the fourth. Milwaukee even struck out four times against reliever Chris Martin in the sixth inning.
Freeman’s homer was his 16th this season. He also doubled in the seventh.
Peralta allowed one run but lasted just four innings. He got out of a bases-loaded jam in the fourth by striking out Cody Bellinger with his 92nd and final pitch.
The Dodgers added an unearned run in the fifth before Lux’s drive to left in the sixth made it 4-0.
Ryan Pepiot (1-0, 3.92 ERA) starts for the Dodgers and Brandon Woodruff (9-3, 3.52) pitches for the Brewers as this four-game series continues tonight with a matchup of right-handers. First pitch is at 7:10 and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.
Elsewhere in the NL Central Monday the Phillies nipped the Reds 4-3 and the Nationals got past the Cubs 5-4. The Cardinals had the day off. St. Louis leads Milwaukee by two games in the division.
The Midwest League was off Monday. Tonight the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (58-49) play at Cedar Rapids (63-45). First pitch is at 6:35.
The Fond du Lac Dock Spiders welcomed in 1,694 fans during their final home game on Saturday night to break the 30,000 mark for the fourth time in franchise history, and the first time since 2019, when they welcomed in 33,412 to Herr-Baker Field. The Dock Spiders saw 32,359 fans attend home games in 2022, the third-highest attended season in franchise history.
The Packers are getting ready for their joint practice with the Saints this week as they prepare for their only home preseason game on Friday against the New Orleans. Arron Rodgers has been targeting wide receiver Christian Watson and tight end Robert Tonyan since they came off the PUP list on Sunday, along with offensive lineman Elgton Jenkins as the team participates in 11 on 11 drills.
Another wide receiver aiming to make an impact is Amari Rogers. After a disappointing rookie season, in which Rodgers had no touchdowns and didn’t have a gain from scrimmage of more than 19 yards or a return of more than 27 yards, he looked impressive last Friday night against the 49ers as he had a 22-yard touchdown catch and a 50-yard kickoff return. In his rookie season Rogers was on the field for less than 10 percent of the Packers offensive snaps and caught just four passes for 45 yards. He averaged 18.1 yards on 11 kickoff returns and 8.3 yards on eight punt returns.
On Monday the Packers unveiled a, brand new JUGS machine. The Packers are the first NFL team to try out what they’re calling “The Seeker”. It’s a one month trial, but so far it’s been very impressive. The computer in this machine can release balls exactly how different quarterbacks throw them so receivers can not only practice catches but also the routes.
The first of the roster cuts are happening. By Tuesday, the Packers have to get down to 85 players. They’ve already released OLB Randy Ramsey, C Cole Schneider and CB Donte Vaughn.
With two of the best players in the country leading the way — and a championship game loss as motivation — Alabama is No. 1 in The Associated Press preseason college football poll for the second straight season and ninth time overall.
