The Packers open their preseason tonight in San Francisco against the 49ers. While Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers and many other key starters will not play, coach Matt LaFleur said the offensive line we’ve seen taking the first-team reps in practice will. The starting five listed on the first unofficial depth chart are Yosh Nijman (LT), Jon Runyan (LG), Myers (C), Jake Hanson (RG) and Royce Newman (RT). Excluding Hanson, the other four offensive linemen made a number of starts last season. The Packers are waiting for the return of injured starters David Bakhtiari and Elgton Jenkins.
Kickoff is at 7:30 CDT and you can hear all of the action beginning with the pregame at 5:00 on FM 102.3, The Bug.
In Thursday Night Football the New York Giants beat the New England Patriots 23-21 and the Baltimore Ravens defeated the Tennessee Titans 23-10.
The Milwaukee Brewers are back in action tonight in St. Louis with a crucial series against the Cardinals. The Brewers trail the Cardinals by just a half-game in the NL Central. A pair of lefthanders will meet as Eric Lauer (8-3, 3.59 ERA) starts for the Brewers against Jordan Montgomery (4-3, 3.53 ERA). First pitch is at 7:15 and the game be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.
In games played Thursday in the Central Division the Rockies beat the Cardinals 8-6, the Diamondbacks downed the Pirates 9-3 and the Cubs defeated the Reds 4-2.
In the Midwest League Thursday night the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers beat South Bend 5-2, at Fox Cities Stadium. The teams play again tonight with the first pitch set for 6:40.
In the Northwood League, after a first-inning home run from Andrew Sojka (CSUN), the Lakeshore Chinooks scored six unanswered runs to defeat the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders, 6-1, at Herr-Baker Field on Thursday night. The Dock Spiders loss, combined with a Wausau Woodchucks win over the Green Bay Rockers, means that a Woodchucks win or a Dock Spiders loss will eliminate Fond du Lac from playoff contention. The Woodchucks win tonight eliminated the Lakeshore Chinooks.
The Dock Spiders will head to Wisconsin Rapids tonight to take on the Rafters at 6:35 p.m. In order to make the playoffs, the Dock Spiders need to win each of their final two games while the Woodchucks lose both against the Madison Mallards. The Dock Spiders return home on Saturday against the Rafters at 6:35 p.m. Saturday night marks Fan Appreciation Night, as the team will say “Thank You” to fans with some surprises for the final home game of the regular season.
On a day filled with nostalgia about baseball and one very special movie, the Reds could’ve used an added sprinkle of magic and mysticism from the cornfield. It was just about the only thing missing from the game they lost to the Cubs, 4-2, on Thursday at the Field of Dreams site.
Reds starting pitcher Nick Lodolo was one strike from completing a perfect top of the first inning when he hit Patrick Wisdom with a backdoor slider. That opened the door for the Cubs, who notched three consecutive hits and scored three runs — including Ian Happ’s RBI double to left-center field that made it a 3-0 game.
Lodolo allowed four runs on seven hits over 4 2/3 innings. The rookie lefty walked four and struck out six.
The Reds finally got on the (manual) scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh inning. Following a leadoff double by Jose Barrero and pinch-hitter Jake Fraley’s walk, Matt Reynolds drove in both runners with a two-run double through the gap in right-center field, but Cincinnati went on to lose its fourth consecutive game, in front of 7,823 fans at the stadium.
Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady will be away from the team for a period of time to “deal with some personal things,” coach Todd Bowles said Thursday.
Bowles said Brady’s absence was discussed in advance and that he will return after next week’s preseason game against the Tennessee Titans on Aug. 20.
When asked if the issue was health-related, Bowles said, “It’s a personal issue. That’s all I can tell you.”
Bowles said he has a “pretty high level of confidence” that Brady will be the starting quarterback in Week 1 at the Dallas Cowboys.
Bowles had previously announced that Brady would not play in the preseason opener Saturday against the Miami Dolphins. Brady had excused absences Aug. 3 — his previously scheduled off day and also his 45th birthday — and last Friday. The Buccaneers as a team were off last Thursday.
Purple is back as the Milwaukee Bucks unveil their new classic edition uniforms for the upcoming season. The uniforms feature the Bucks’ iconic purple and green, replicating the team’s road uniforms worn between 1994 and 2006. The Bucks say the purple uniforms have become synonymous with Ray Allen, Sam Cassell and Glenn Robinson. The logo on the jerseys will also be from that era with the classic font across the chest.
his Light It Up classic look will be part of a rotation during the 20022-23 season, along with their white Association, green Icon and recently unveiled black Statement uniforms. A new City Edition uniform will also join the mix, but it has yet to be released.
Bill Russell’s No. 6 jersey is being retired across the NBA. The NBA and the National Basketball Players Association made the announcement Thursday, permanently retiring the number worn by the 11-time champion, civil rights activist and someone good enough to have been enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame as both a player and a coach. Russell becomes the first player to have his number retired leaguewide.
Players who currently wear No. 6 — including the Los Angeles Lakers’ LeBron James — may continue doing so. But the number cannot be issued again, the league said.
Russell died on July 31st at the age of 88. He was the most prolific winner in NBA history, an 11-time champion during a 13-year career — winning the last two of those titles as a player-coach — and the first Black coach in any of the major U.S. pro sports to win a championship.
