Sports for Thursday

From Wayne Mausser

Rowdy Tellez hit a tying homer in the ninth inning and made a key defensive play in the 10th, setting up Willy Adames’ game-ending RBI single that gave the Milwaukee Brewers a 4-3 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday.

Adames had struck out in his previous three at-bats before he came up in the 10th following an intentional walk to Christian Yelich. His grounder off Ryan Thompson (3-3) got past diving shortstop Taylor Walls and scored automatic runner Tyrone Taylor from second base.   Milwaukee completed a two-game sweep of Tampa Bay..

The Rays fell even with division rival Baltimore for the final AL wild card.

In the top of the 10th, first baseman Tellez fielded Walls’ grounder and threw to third to cut down automatic runner Francisco Mejía. Catcher Victor Caratini then threw out Walls trying to steal second.

Devin Williams (3-2) ended the inning by striking out Jose Siri.

Tellez, who entered as a pinch-hitter in the sixth, led off the ninth with his 23rd homer, a drive to center off Colin Poche that made it 3-3.

Randy Arozarena hit his first homer since July 17, a 431-foot shot off Milwaukee starter Brandon Woodruff in the seventh that put the Rays ahead 3-2. Yu Chang homered in the fifth off Woodruff, who allowed three runs on four hits in seven innings.

Rays starter Jeffrey Springs gave up two runs in five innings while striking out eight.

Milwaukee took a 2-0 lead in the first thanks in part to a pair of soft fly balls that landed for singles in shallow left field.

Andrew McCutchen doubled, then scored on Mike Brosseau’s single. Springs was then called for a balk while pitching to Hunter Renfroe, walked Renfroe, and gave up a single by Keston Hiura that scored Brosseau.

David Peralta got the Rays on the board with an RBI single in the third.

In other team news, Brewers RHP Adrian Houser (elbow) has a rehabilitation appearance for Triple-A Nashville on Thursday.

The Brewers are off today before opening a three-game series at St. Louis starting Friday with LHP Eric Lauer (8-3, 3.59) facing Cardinals LHP Jordan Montgomery (4-3, 3.53).

Elsewhere in the NL Central Wednesday the Mets pounded the Reds 10-2, the Cubs beat the Nationals 4-2, Pittsburgh got past Arizona 6-4 and St. Louis beat Colorado 9-5.  The Cardinals maintain their one game lead over the Brewers in the division.

In the Midwest League Wednesday the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers beat South Bend 6-2 at Fox Cities Stadium.  The teams meet again tonight with the first pitch slated for 6:40.

Tyeler Hawkins (Louisville) was hit by a pitch in the 10th inning to bring home Parker Noland (Vanderbilt), and give the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders a 7-6 win over the Lakeshore Chinooks to snap their four-game losing streak on Wednesday night at Herr-Baker Field.

The win, combined with a Wausau Woodchucks loss to the Green Bay Rockers, keeps the Dock Spiders elimination number at four, and they sit one game back of the Woodchucks for the final Northwoods League playoff spot with three games remaining. The Dock Spiders are now 35-33 on the year, 16-18 in the second half. The Chinooks fell to 33-35 overall, and 15-17 in the second half.

The two will meet for their final match-up of the season tonight at 6:35 p.m. at Herr-Baker Field. Thursday is Marty Paulsen Appreciation Night, as the Dock Spiders celebrate the 50-plus year career of the former Fond du Lac High School baseball coach, who retired this past spring. The first 250 fans will also receive an Arañas de Muelle drawstring bag courtesy of Moraine Park Technical College.

While many key veterans and starters will watch the first preseason game from the sidelines, the Packers ‘starting’ offensive line will not.

Head coach Matt LaFleur said Wednesday the group that has been taking the number one reps in practice will play against San Francisco. That’s especially important as the Packers look for the best five to start week one with stars Elgton Jenkins and David Bakhtiari working their way back.  They will line up in front of starter Jordan Love.

Many of the names in the offensive line remain the same, there are some differences. Big name veterans like Billy Turner and Lucas Patrick are now gone. Luke Butkus moved into the offensive line coach role after serving as an assistant under now offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich.

“It’s easy to point to David and Elgton who have been so instrumental in our success here, and are great players. And we’ve got a lot of young guys. We still feel good about the group. There’s still a lot of growth in front of them,” said head coach Matt Lafleur.

Jake Hansen was drafted as a center in 2020, but now finds himself taking snaps with the first unit as a guard with Royce Newman moving over to right tackle at the start of camp. Local product Cole Van Lanen is stepping up in his second training camp as well. The Bay Port grad was listed as the second string left tackle on the first depth chart heading into the 49ers game, which starts at 7:30 CDT.

There are two games tonight in Thursday Night Football.  The Giants play at New England and Tennessee plays at Baltimore.

U.S. Venture surpassed their goal of $4.6 million with its annual U.S. Venture Open fundraiser.  With hundreds of partners, golfers and volunteers, the company raised $4.8 million. The event brought in over 1,200 attendees and 900 golfers. It’s the nation’s largest one-day charity event.  This year’s dinner featured Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur. Packers running backs, Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon joined their coach.

Since its beginning, the event has raised more than $60 million. Grants have impacted 235 organizations in the Green Bay, Fox Valley and Oshkosh regions.

A longtime college football coach is retiring after 32 years. Ripon Red Hawks head football coach and defensive coordinator, Ron Ernst, has officially announced he will retire at the end of the 2022 season.

During his coaching career at Ripon, Ernst led the Red Hawks to 184 wins and 113 losses, making him the winningest football coach in both the Midwest Conference (MWC) and Ripon College history.

Ernst has led the Red Hawks to 26 winning seasons, producing a .614 win percentage, capturing three MWC North Division titles (1995, 1996 and 1997) and two MWC Championships (1996 and 2001). Ernst was named MWC Coach of the Year in 1996 when he led the team to a school-record nine-win season. He also has been named the NCAA Division III Region 5 Coach of the Year (1995) and the Wisconsin Football Private College Coach of the Year on three occasions (2001, 2008 and 2010).

In 2006, Ernst was inducted into the Ripon College Hall of Fame and in March 2009, he earned a spot in the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
