Jury Finds FDL Man Guilty Of Hate Crime Homicide Trial Moves To Phase Two

A Fond du Lac County jury Wednesday found a 29-year-old Fond du Lac man guilty of intentionally hitting and killing a motorcyclist with his father’s pickup truck in July of 2020.  The jury reached their decision on the first degree intentional homicide with a dangerous weapon charge against Daniel Navarro after 2 ½ days of testimony and 45 minutes of deliberation. The jury moved to the second phase of the trial yesterday afternoon, addressing Navarro’s plea of not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect. The trial is expected to conclude today. Navarro was charged with the hate crime homicide of 55-year-old Phillip Thiessen of Fond du Lac who died at the scene of the crash on Winnebago Drive in the Fond du Lac area. Navarro told investigators he was harassed by white co-workers because he was Mexican. Fond du Lac County District Attorney Eric Toney is prosecuting the case, which was investigated by the County Sheriff’s Office.

Allergies Or COVID

Fond du Lac County Public Health Officer Kim Mueller says to make sure the symptoms you may be feeling are really from allergies and not from COVID-19. She says some of the symptoms of the coronavirus can mimic allergies so it is best to test to be certain what you really have.  She also reminds County residents that they have moved COVID testing back to the County Fairgrounds in Fond du Lac. They had to move the testing to the Church of Peace parking lot in Fond du Lac briefly to accommodate the Fond du Lac County Fair. Testing is available Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 8 am to 4:30 pm.

Playground Request

The City of Berlin has put in a request with Green Lake County for some of the American Rescue Plan Act money the county received to create a special playground in the city. Common Council member Luke Dretske says instead of just being up to American with Disabilities Act standards the playground would be all inconclusive so people of all abilities could use it. He says there is nothing like that nearby except maybe in Oshkosh. He says the county has used the ARPA money for improvements that benefit county residents, but they aren’t always things a person would notice unless they were informed about them. He says the playground would be a quality of life benefit that people could see. He says the city will be getting quotes on how much something like that type of playground would cost.
